Cranberry juice may fight viruses, study finds
Mon Jun 6, 3:00 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Cranberry juice, which studies have shown may help disrupt bacterial infections of the urinary tract, may also work against gastrointestinal viruses, U.S. researchers reported on Monday.

Tests on animal viruses in lab dishes suggest the juice may help prevent viruses from infecting cells, the team at St. Francis College and Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York found.

"Within the last five years, an increasingly large number of studies have suggested cranberry juice to be an effective commercial product for the reduction of urinary tract infections in women," Patrice Cohen of St. Francis, who worked on the study, said in a statement.

No studies have shown for sure that cranberry juice prevents any kind of infection, bacterial or viral. But some groups of researchers are testing the possibilities.

1. In what forms?
Does it need to be pure or can it be ladened with sugar? The article did state "with a commercially available cranberry juice drink". This sounds promising. I've heard of cranberry juice being good for urinary tract infections, but I haven't thought of it in more general terms. It's good to have some means of treating viral infections. Viruses are so right-wing-like.

Thanks for posting this.

4. I wonder if....
mixing it with vodka would negate the effect ?

bummer ;>))

Actually, I started drinking it again after a long time off ---the cranberry juice, that is. If it helps me drink less diet pepsi and wine,( not together, of course!), I'm all for it. ;>)

9. Woohoo!
Cosmos all around.

Knudsen makes a 100% cranberry juice that is delicious. It's pricey though, around $6-7 for a 32 oz bottle.

My favorite Cosmo recipe:

2 oz. Absolute Mandrin Vodka
1 oz. Cointreau
1 oz. Knudsen Cranberry Juice
splash fresh lime juice

3. May prevent viruses
but will give people diabetes. Have you read the labels seeing how much corn syrup is in it. Not only that, corn intolerent persons can't drink it either. Get you canberries as craberries and eat or make juice with them using maybe a tad of sugar or orange juice from a sqeezed orange.

10. AZO Cranberry Pills
For those of us who aren't real big on drinking cranberry juice

And while we're talking about berries, find out all you can about the cancer-curing properties of ellagic acid found in raspberries, blueberries, and more

12. You can get cranberry
juice without corn syrup. Northland makes a good one. It is 100% juice, 27% cranberry with the rest being apple and grape. I like their Cranberry/Raspberry.

5. funny you should mention cranberry
I never drink sodas, or booze, so it's always an adventure trying to get alternative drinks at restaurants. I ordered cranberry juice at TGI Friday's tonight. The waitress said they didn't have that... I'm like, "It's on the menu!"
I got my juice in the end........

bladder and urinary and cranberry juice is all her silly doctor ever prescribed for her.

I'm amazed. Cranberry juice has been known for years to be a healthy alternative and an antidote. What is up with this "new" report?

DAMN THEM ALL!

Get thee all to a health food store soon and to alternative doctors!

ASAP!

Probably best at this time to run away from "Ocean Spray". The real deal can be found without the high amount of "fructose".

I buy it all the time.

13. Trader Joe's stocks both cranberry concentrate pills & juice
And NO! I don't work for them.

I've just found both products to be very effective for stopping a UTI in the early stages.
