Iraq insurgents 'ready to disarm'
Edited on Tue Jun-07-05 12:24 PM by ECH1969
A prominent Iraqi Sunni politician has said that two insurgent groups are ready to disarm and begin talks with the Iraqi government.
Former minister Ayham al-Samarie said the Islamic Army in Iraq and the Mujahideen Army represented more than 50% of the resistance.

He said he began contacting the groups' political leaders five months ago.

Truce possible

Mr Samarie, who also discussed his contacts on the Dubai-based al-Arabiya satellite network, told AP he had not met any of the field commanders of the two groups.

He said no deal had been made on disarming, but a truce of limited duration could be arranged to prove their goodwill after talks began.

8. Even if it were true
Edited on Tue Jun-07-05 12:32 PM by ECH1969
These two groups are certainly aren't 50% of the insurgency. Ansar al-Sunna and al-Qadea are the ones behind the vast majority of daily suicide attacks. These two are domestic Sunnis that have made the news with their attacks once or twice at best.

5. Highly, highly unlikely
The insurgency is enjoying great success on the battlefield. There is no reason in the world for them to surrender.

16. He thinks he has bought off a couple of guys
Hardly the same thing as "insurgents ready to disarm".

The key phrase: "he had not met any of the field commanders of the two groups."

More likely this is a propaganda effort, to either:
- provide political cover for a U.S. offensive ("they are so close to disarming, we just need the big push")
or
- attempt to sew discord within the resistance ("some of us are ready to cut a deal, maybe I should be first").

Probably it is meant to do both things, and will succeed at neither.

17. There are tons of syrupy, warm-fuzzy Iraq stories---
...coming out lately.

They are all a sham.

They're all designed to deflect attention from the disgusting, horrendous quagmire that we've created there--which only continues to worsen.

I'm sick of the "And NOW!! The newest and GREATEST, American-led offensive to date!" stories.

This administration is in big trouble over dozens of issues. They're losing in Iraq and their solution is to disseminate non-news and lies--in order to make this cauldron of failure look wonderful and glorious.

Lipstick on a cockroach.

Are they insurgents, resistance fighters, or terrorists? Check this out. Centcom better figure out the language they want to use during negotiations.

Convoy attacked west of Baghdad

Baghdad , Iraq – A convoy of contractors was attacked by terrorists at 11:30 a.m. June 7, while they were delivering supplies for Coalition forces west of here.

A Coalition forces quick reaction force responded to the scene of the attack and secured the area.

No further information is available at this time.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - A Sunni Arab politician said Tuesday two insurgent groups were willing to negotiate with the government, possibly opening a new political front in embattled Iraq. But a string of coordinated deadly bombings signaled that militants remain fierce.

The former Cabinet minister said he had established contact with the groups which account for a large part of the Sunni insurgents and were responsible for attacks against Iraqis and foreigners, including assassinations and kidnappings.

It was the first public disclosure that such negotiations might be in the offing with specific groups, but independent confirmation was not possible. Al-Jaafari's government declined comment."

23. Yeah the Iraq rebels want to say the following.....
Edited on Wed Jun-08-05 05:27 AM by LightningFlash
"Get out of our country right now, and leave us alone!!!!"

They don't want to be occupied anymore by corrupt, religious oil companies.

The corrupt Iraqis are probably saying "We'll give you free incentives, land, and a no-bid contract for exxon mobil if you quietly.........remove yourselves and give us control of the country."

This guy is just tooting his own horn. He hasn't even talked to any of the captains in the insurgency, by his own admission. Move along.

There have been so many reports on Sunni groups willing to negotiate in the last months, on news sites ranging from al-jazeera to the bbc.

There is only one minor problem: They always demand a timetable for the complete withdrawal of US troops (sometimes that's their ONLY demand), and that's exactly something the american puppet government can't give them.

Can you imagine a conversation between a Sunni tribal leader and a U.S. general?
Sunni: "So Iraq is free of WMD's, Saddam is removed from power and in jail and there have been elections. All your objectives in this war have been met. Now we promise you peace and stability if you leave, so why don't you just leave?"
American General:"Well, you see, I can see how you might say that, but those were not our real objectives...Our real objectives were to BUILD FOURTEEN PERMANENT MILITARY BASES, CREATE A PERMANENT MILITARY PRESENCE IN THE MIDDLE EAST AND STAY HERE UNTIL THE LAST DROP OF OIL HAS LEFT THE COUNTRY"
