Stamper takes rap for WTO in his memoirs

By Nancy Bartley

Seattle Times staff reporter

<snip>
While "Breaking Ranks" covers a variety of issues, it's the chapter on the World Trade Organization riots that probably will be the most compelling to Seattle citizens.

The riots that plagued the WTO meetings shattered Seattle's innocence, caused $2.5 million in damage and gave Seattle officials a harsh comeuppance that Stamper is a long way from forgetting.

<snip>
"They divided our forces and spread the already thin ranks to the point of breaking ... At that point we were left with few options ... gas is one of them," he said. He also was pained to learn of incidents in which police (King County and Tukwila officers) assaulted civilians.

When later asked by reporters whether he had seen any inappropriate behavior among the officers, Stamper told them he had.

1. Oh i remember the Battle for Seattle......
I was a young, naive, idealistic radical... hoping the Teamsters would get all their truckers to drive into Seattle and overturn their semi-trailers in the streets to be used as street barricades... w2atching it all from the university computer lab unfold.... back then we fought the 21st century battle against corporate globalism... now we fight a desperate death-battle with early 20th century ultra-nationalistic fascism..... oh the irony.

2. He may be liberal
but referring to US citizens as "civilians" is not a liberal term.

It's a military one , and is a term of conquest.
