Congresswoman (Northup, R-Ky.) Pushes for Reimported Drugs

WASHINGTON -- A maverick Republican congresswoman moved on Tuesday to prohibit the Bush administration from negotiating trade agreements that thwart imports of lower-cost medicines, a provision included in recent accords at the behest of pharmaceutical companies.

In doing so, Rep. Anne Northup, R-Ky., won a symbolic victory over drug companies -- a major donor to the GOP -- as well as the House leadership and the Bush administration.

... House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, said that "somehow" Northrup's provision would be dropped.

Ann Northup is one of the few Republicans I can respect. She's done a lot for Louisville and broke early from the party ranks about not allowing drugs in from Canada.

2. I'm surprised this isn't a bigger issue with the public

Sixty Minutes had a report on this and showed that you can import the same drugs from another country and consumers can save money. jFor all those who are reducing their dosages or not taking medicines because they cannot afford it, then this should be the number one issue.
