U.S. to N.Y.: Return $44M in Sept. 11 Aid
WASHINGTON - A congressional inquiry has found New York failed to follow instructions from Congress on the spending of $44 million in Sept. 11 aid and should give the money back or get lawmakers to pass a law allowing the expenditure.

A New York official countered Tuesday night that if the federal government persists with the effort, it would have to take the money back directly from Sept. 11 victims.

"The federal government authorized these funds to go to 9/11 victims and their families in the first place, and given that they originally approved it, it would be wrong for them years later to take the money back from victims," said Jon Sullivan, a spokesman for the state workers' compensation board.

The bad news for New York comes just as the House is considering whether to take back another $125 million in Sept. 11 workers' compensation aid because the state has yet to spend it nearly four years after the 2001 terror attack.

1. Feds: NY must give back some 9/11 aid
WASHINGTON -- A week after the Bush administration said it wants to reclaim $125 million for rescue workers at ground zero that so far has gone unspent, now the investigative arm of Congress says it wants New York to return $44 million that the state spent on victims of the terror attacks.

"Only in Washington," said Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan). "We need to stop the administration's money grab and figure out how we can get help to the those injured in 9/11 who are still suffering."

Maloney's comments were in response to a report released Tuesday by the Government Accountability Office, which says New York State spent $44 million given to it by the federal government to cover the costs of victims' awards, when in fact that money was only supposed to fund the processing of paperwork requesting claims after the Sept. 11 attacks.

5. Many lung injuries to these workers, first of all,
are only beginning to show themselves, and will CONTINUE to pop up for these BRAVE workers. What were they, FREAKIN' idiots to believe the EPA when they lied? Then, if you aren't sick now, screw you later although, LATER is when MOST of these illnesses will rear their ugly head.

As far as the victims keeping the money, OMG. They are willing to pay for 44 million dollars for paperwork/claims, but not satisfy the damn claims? I know MANY people who were there and THIS is ONLY THE LEAST CHRISTIAN THING to even think about, let alone say, then let alone DO. Holy God, WHO IS ON THIS CONGRESSIONAL COMMITTEE?

They deserve some serious career consequences. They don't represent the people, PLAINLY this is in-your-face greed/evil (call it what it is).

Audit shows $8.8 billion in Iraq funds missing
Coalition official cites body for lax ‘stewardship’
Updated: 6:06 p.m. ET Aug. 19, 2004WASHINGTON - At least $8.8 billion in Iraqi funds that was given to Iraqi ministries by the former U.S.-led authority there cannot be accounted for, according to a draft U.S. audit set for release soon.

The audit by the Coalition Provisional Authority’s own inspector general blasts the CPA for “not providing adequate stewardship” of at least $8.8 billion from the Development Fund for Iraq that was given to Iraqi ministries.

The audit was first reported on a Web site earlier this month by David Hackworth, a journalist and retired colonel. A U.S. official confirmed that the contents of the leaked audit cited by Hackworth were accurate.

11. If they recoup this,
they can pay for another 90 min in Iraq, or maybe another carrier landing for Smirk. Maybe they can next hit up McDonald's workers for back taxes.

17. First of all
Show me a red state that has had to return a single dime.

Second of all, just wait til all the lung cancer and other disease claims start coming in. Then that money won't remotely be enough.
