Rainbow Family looks for happier visit
http://www.wvgazette.com/section/News/2005060730

Many Rainbow Family members are anxious to return to West Virginia for the first time in 25 years so they can change the “energy” emitting from the murders of two women on their way to the counterculture group’s last Mountain State gathering.

“One of the reasons I think people were hesitant to go back to West Virginia was the murder of those two girls,” said Karin Zirk, a Californian who has been speaking for the somewhat loosely organized group.

The summer of 1980 was the first time the group — known as peace-loving hippie types — held its annual gathering in the East, and the two murders dominated news about the event.

1. Rainbow Gatherings are amazing events.
Maybe someday the world will evolve into a giant Rainbow Gathering if big businesses and the governments they control do not destroy the planet first.

2. Man, I haven't been to a gathering in awhile
I went to a couple national gatherings and several regionals in the mid-90s. Pretty amazing - I am actually thinking of going to one this fall - there is a tiny Michigan Regional in October (I think) - only a weekend long, last time I went there were about 50 people there. I don't think I could handle a big national one anymore.

5. I met some of these people.
My only criticism is that some of the older ones who were politically active in the early 70s should know better than simply to be escapist. There are real fights right now that they should be a part of--you cannot change society through "lifestyle" alone.
