CPS sounds call for new investigators -TX ("low pay, gritty work")

AUSTIN – The call went out from state government on Tuesday: Child Protective Services needs you.

College graduates are needed for 850 new child-abuse investigator positions that will be created in the next two years, said Darrell Azar, spokesman for CPS' parent agency, the Department of Family and Protective Services.

Recruiting so many college graduates for CPS' gritty work and low pay will be tough, though not impossible, said Madeline McClure of Dallas, who's spent several years urging improvements to the agency's recruitment and retention efforts.

Mr. Perry said Texas' very high caseloads for child-abuse investigators will be cut by 40 percent, from about 74 cases per worker per month now to 45 cases in 2007.

National child welfare groups recommend no more than 12 to 15 cases per month per investigator.

Other states than Texas have operated their social and protective services on good models. Texas has historically spent 3rd state from the bottom in all forms of public assistance, and that rich state is bunched down there with the poorest states because of its redneck philosophy of anti-WULFARE and "TOUGH" INDIVIDUALISM. Yet when a redneck hits hard times you've never heard anybody else YELL SO LOUDLY.

There was/is incompetence and mismanagement and ENRON type office monkey business at work there and all they're doing is papering it over with paper (money).
