But on Saturday Dziwisz, John Paul's closest confidant during his 27-year papacy, told Polish public radio the papers should be kept for posterity, and on Wednesday he said the Pope had given him the right to decide on the documents' fate.
"The Holy Father left me an absolutely free hand to decide how to use his archives. I do not see any reason to destroy or burn anything in the private archive," Dziwisz told reporters.
He did not elaborate.
