Gunmen Kill Mexican Border City Police Chief During First Day on Job
http://ap.tbo.com/ap/breaking/MGBLD0PIQ9E.html

NUEVO LAREDO, Mexico (AP) - An unknown number of gunmen shot Nuevo Laredo's new police chief at least 35 times and killed him Wednesday only hours after he took the post, officials said.

Alejandro Dominguez, a businessman who once worked at the federal attorney general's office and was a cousin of ex-Attorney General Javier Coello Trejo, told reporters upon assuming control of the city's police force that he wasn't afraid of anything, even though many police chiefs here have met violent ends recently.

"I don't owe anybody anything, my duty is to the citizenry," he said. "I think those who should be afraid are those who have been compromised."

Hours later, a group of assailants opened fire on Dominguez as he was climbing into his Ford Lobo truck outside the city's National Business Chamber, of which he was the director.

1. Wow....
They don't waste any time.

Now nobody will take the job and the gangs will win until someone that accepts bribe money comes to town.

6. Lone Wolf Gonzales, would be my choice.
Into the fray rode one, just one, Texas Ranger, Lone Wolf Gonzales.

"Hey, when are the others goin to git here?" the Sheriff moaned. "Sheriff", said Lone Wolf, " just how many riots y'all got here?" "One" replied the Sheriff. Then Lone Wolf held up his finger and said "One Riot One Ranger"

Oil boom days in TX.

4. in contrast
I group of Police officers from Deming NM, went south in to Mexico last week and gave speeches to the students in Casa Grandes---which in more then 100 miles south--they gave interviews to the local paper about what a wonderful reception they received, from the students and everyone around there-including the local police------there purpose for the visit was a little talk was about drugs and how you should not do drugs ---you know the usual crap-----I dont really know what good this will all do---when they go and shoot down a police chief before he can even start the job----------------to me its all bullshit----if we would get civilized in this country-- and legalize drugs-- maybe this violence would at least fall off.

I live right on the border and its everyday that they pick up someone trafficking in drugs----which is probably about 1% of the traffic---the other 99% get through----the big thing is using high school students for mules---give them 1500 dollars to make a run----and if they get caught it a slap on the wrist------not like an adult---------thats big money fo r a student--------

5. Another Mexican police chief shot on U.S. border (Reuters)
(O.K. folks, let's show that we are NOT hypocrites, I remember we showed a lot of compassion for the Canadian Mounties when they had a shooting, don't these Mexican Police deserve a little too?)

Another Mexican police chief shot on U.S. border

Thu Jun 9, 2005 12:49 AM ET

NUEVO LAREDO, Mexico (Reuters) - Gunmen shot and killed a Mexican police chief in this northern border city on Wednesday, judicial sources said, the third police commander attacked in a week and the seventh killed this year in a brutal war with drug cartels.

Alejandro Dominguez was sprayed with about 30 bullets while he was driving on Wednesday evening, sources at federal and local prosecution offices said. The attack came hours after Dominguez was appointed a local public security chief. Dominguez's cousin was former Deputy Attorney General Javier Coello, sources said.

A witness to the attack said gunfire came from more than one vehicle following Dominguez's car. "They were in convoy with their lights switched off. After the first burst of shooting I threw myself on the ground behind a car," said a car washer at the scene who declined to give his name.

On Thursday, gunmen in Nuevo Laredo killed a municipal police commander in front of his young daughter. A day earlier another local police chief was ambushed and wounded driving through the city center. Nuevo Laredo is a major transit point for both legitimate trade and illegal narcotics entering the United States. It is in the grip of an all-out war between rival drug gangs.

...the assailants opened fire from inside their cars, then got out to shoot some more...
once Dominguez was dead, the gunmen climbed back into their cars and headed west slowly, with their lights turned off."

8. Mexican police chief killed after 9 hours on job
MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) -- For weeks, no one applied for the Nuevo Laredo police chief job. Many saw it as a death sentence.

But Alejandro Dominguez proudly took office on Wednesday, saying he wasn't afraid of anything. Nine hours later, he was ambushed and killed by gunmen who fired three dozen times.

Dominguez's violent death was the latest blow to Nuevo Laredo, a city across from Laredo, Texas, that has been crippled by a wave of drug violence. The city is on the front line of a turf battle between Mexico's two largest drug gangs, the Gulf and Juarez cartels. Since January, more than 60 people have been killed there, including several city police officers.

President Vicente Fox's administration sent in 700 soldiers and federal agents in March to try to restore law and order.

9. Ugh. I thought these things happened
primarily in Iraq. Not so, apparently. Why does my mind wander to thoughts of drug trafficing?

Thanks, C.
