GOP, Dems Declare Victory in Confirmations

By JESSE J. HOLLAND

Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - Republicans and Democrats alike claimed victory as the Senate completed an unprecedented run of long-delayed appeals court confirmations and looked ahead to a possible Supreme Court nomination this summer.

Republicans say the confirmations of long-filibustered judges William Pryor, Janice Rogers Brown, Priscilla Owen, David McKeague and Richard Griffin for the U.S. Appeals Court show that President Bush can get conservatives on the nation's highest courts despite the objections of Democrats.

....

``Now that the filibuster tiger has been put back in its cage, the nuclear option has been put back in its cage,'' said Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn.

Democrats say the Republican failure to eliminate the judicial filibusters shows they can stop ultraconservative judges from being rammed through the Senate and onto the Supreme Court - even though they had to let those five nominees through to the second highest court in the judicial system.

6. You're absolutely right!. Even a loss by the Democrats on the nuclear
option would have been far better than what has happened. I'll give you ten to one odds on a fiver that the Repubs will dishonor the agreement on the first SCOTUS nominee.

9. I am not stupid enough to take that bet.
We got nothing out of the 'negotiations' to prevent Frist's going nuclear extravaganza.

15. Boy that is an UNDERSTATEMENT!
OK, they passed these "unacceptable" "horrible" judges that they previously railed against (justifiably) - so what new (low) standard do they have to consider one "unacceptable".

I'm afraid to ask.

2. I'm confused.
What's to stop frist from using the nuclear option if the Dems want to filibuster a nominee to SCOTUS?

18. In that case...
as an opposition party, with no power whatsoever to change the inevitable onslaught of gop legislation and appointments, why does it behoove the Dem leadership to go down in flames defending our Party's principles?

Why compromise? Let the country go to hell. Give the voters what they voted for... the bush agenda.

It's my firm belief that nothing will swing the pendulum our way than a great deal of pain inflicted on the voting public.

5. An unloaded rifle is nothin' but a fancy club
That's exactly what an unused filibuster option is - an unloaded rifle. And the GOPers know it.

10. I'm sorry.
and this is perhaps over the top. But Democrats "declaring victory" reminds me of Marshal Petain of Vichy France "declaring victory" in "restraining Germany" through abject cooperation.

11. It's not over the top at all. It's Vichy Democrats kissing fascist ass.
Edited on Fri Jun-10-05 10:34 AM by TahitiNut
It's identical in theme and substance. It's collaborationist Jews saying "it could be worse" as they're shipped to the camps. It's the moron falling past the 40th floor window saying "so far, so good!" It's the imbecile on the Bataan Death March calling it a nice stroll in the sunshine.

They surrendered.
