Eleven people have been killed and 29 others injured after a car bomb exploded overnight in a street in a Shia area of Baghdad.

Police said on Saturday the target of the bomb was not clear. The car, parked in the street in northwest Baghdad, exploded at around 11pm (1800 GMT) on Friday.

This is considered the worst case of violence since the Iraqi authorities launched a major operation called Operation Lightning on 29 May, aimed at hunting down anti-US fighters, blamed for fuelling the violence.

Elsewhere in Baghdad, a bomber wearing the uniform of Iraq's high-profile Wolf Brigade police force killed five officers and wounded seven others at the commando unit's headquarters on Saturday, Aljazeera reported.

edit: new headline

Bomber hits elite Iraqi police HQ

A suicide bomber has killed a member of an elite Iraqi police unit after walking into its Baghdad headquarters disguised as a policeman.

One member of the Wolf Brigade, a unit of commandos involved in operations against militants, died in the blast and at least seven were injured.

There are reports the attacker may have been a member of the unit himself.

Gunmen also killed 10 construction workers on a minibus which was travelling towards Baghdad........

4. The same Wolf Brigade which runs the reality confession tv show?
Edited on Sat Jun-11-05 07:21 AM by Kagemusha
Geez, it's sad to even have to consider how deserving or not the people there may have been...

And I meant the show where terrorists confess in a public spectacle broadcast all over Iraq.

5. Should just pin this as the generic daily headline
Along with its fraternal twin, "Insurgent attacks kill several US soldiers." Has a day gone by that we haven't seen both of these headlines just with different numbers and specific locations?

6. Yep. Why even bother to write the new articles every day?
It's the same thing over and over again. Write it once, and run it every day-couldn't go wrong.

9. Ex-commando kills 3 Iraq police
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A former Iraqi police commando blew himself up on Saturday in a failed bid to assassinate the leader of the controversial Wolf Brigade, killing three members of the force in the process, the Interior Minister said.

Police at the scene of the suicide bombing in the Baghdad headquarters of the Wolf Brigade had earlier given a higher toll.

Minister Bayan Jabor said one officer was wounded when the bomber, a former brigade member, entered the compound wearing the unit's distinctive uniform as police reported for duty. Two other former members were being hunted, he added.

It was unclear what motivated the attempt to kill Major General Mohammed Qureishi, the Wolf Brigade's founder, better known by the nom de guerre Abu Walid, under which he hosts his own television show grilling confessed insurgents.

11. Unclear what motivated him? DUH!
Helllllooooo.... it might just be the "grilling" of "confessed insurgents" --> read: the TORTURE of his friends, family, loved ones.

Why is anybody surprised at these bombings when this sort of televised idiocy continues?

12. 11 Killed by Gunmen South of Baghdad
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Gunmen attacked a busload of construction workers south of Baghdad on Saturday, killing at least 11 and wounding three others, police said.

The attack occurred in Diyara, 30 miles south of Baghdad, at around 10:30 a.m. when gunmen in at least two cars opened fire on a minibus, said Muthana Khalid, police spokesman for the city of Hillah.

Muthana said the men were all construction workers who lived in Jbala, near Hillah, and were headed to Baghdad. They were employed on various projects at U.S. and Iraqi bases in the Baghdad area, he added. Hillah is about 60 miles south of Baghdad.

A suicide bomber has killed three members of the elite Iraqi police unit in which he reportedly once served after walking into its Baghdad base.

17. Insurgents in Iraq Go on Killing Spree
Edited on Sat Jun-11-05 05:38 PM by deadparrot
BAGHDAD, Iraq - A former commando in the feared Wolf Brigade blew himself up after sneaking into the morning roll call at the unit's heavily fortified headquarters Saturday, one of a series of weekend insurgent attacks that killed at least 35 people including youngsters waiting to buy sandwiches and ice cream. Near the Syrian border, Marine airstrikes wiped out a band of 40 heavily armed militants.

The American military said Marines ordered the four-hour bombardment near the Anbar province frontier city of Qaim after insurgents took control of a road "and were threatening Iraqi civilians,"

The Marines had lost seven men to militant attacks in the province, an insurgent stronghold, since Thursday. Saturday's airstrikes, 200 miles west of Baghdad, hit insurgents suspected in the recent killing of 21 people, including three who were beheaded and believed to be from a group of missing Iraqi soldiers.

The Marines said their aircraft fired seven precision-guided missiles at insurgents who were armed with AK-47 assault rifles, medium-duty machine guns and rocket-propelled grenade launchers. No U.S. forces nor civilians were hurt in the confrontation, the military said.
