KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, June 13 (Reuters) - A bomb blast hit a U.S. military convoy outside the southern Afghan city of Kandahar on Monday. The U.S. military said at least four U.S. soldiers were wounded, while police said at least five Americans died.

"The initial report we have indicates an improvised explosive device hit a coalition convoy in Kandahar today," said U.S. military spokeswoman Lieutenant Cindy Moore. "Four U.S. soldiers were hurt and evacuated for treatment."

Earlier, a senior Afghan police officer in Kandahar said at least five U.S. troops were killed in the blast which came from a taxi as a U.S. military convoy was passing along a main road to the west of the city.

The officer, who did not want to be identified, said it appeared to a suicide attack in which the driver of the taxi died.

10. Excellent point.
Bush virtually abandoned the mission in Afghanistan to pursue his criminal oil grab.

3. Your sentiment struck me as strange.
Why would "god" protect "our" troops anymore than that bomber? How do we know what side "god" might be on? I for one am not going to ask "god" for anymore help on this, both sides seem to be keeping him busy without me chiming in.

8. no more strange than any other evocation of the gods....
the name of god and other theistic dieties are evoked often in times of stress or in times of despair... even non-believers use such figures of speech in order to make a point, etc. What strikes me as strange is your taking issue with such usage. I am a militant agnostic myself, but to raise such an issue in response to such a topic seems petty at best.

15. Anyone daring to express concern for troops will be the recipient ...
of such petty remarks.

A frequent example: a post expressing concern for the troops, followed by a vicious response "what about the dead Iraqis?!?
Jesus H Christ, don't these people realize that we can care about more than one thing at a time?

BTW - I too am agnostic and frequently invoke the name of Jesus H. Christ. :)

Another example I encountered today: a poster who claimed that our soldiers serving now are having a good time in combat and enjoy killing Iraqis! No doubt there is a proportionate number of psychos in the military as in the general population, but this was intended as a blanket statement describing all troops currently serving.

This kind of shit makes me want to stop reading DU.

18. i was wondering if "evocation" was right... it sounded wierd....
invocation was the word i was looking for and you used it. They are very similar, though... but invoke is definitely the better one in this case.

evoke
1. To summon or call forth: actions that evoked our mistrust.
2. To call to mind by naming, citing, or suggesting: songs that evoke old memories.
3. To create anew, especially by means of the imagination: a novel that evokes the Depression in accurate detail.

invoke
# To call on (a higher power) for assistance, support, or inspiration: “Stretching out her hands she had the air of a Greek woman who invoked a deity” (Ford Madox Ford).
# To appeal to or cite in support or justification.
# To call for earnestly; solicit: invoked the help of a passing motorist.
# To summon with incantations; conjure.
ation.

--only to help them. That's all. You're reading more in than was there.

17. Who said anything about choosing sides?
And I said whatever "gods" there may be.

I don't believe in a single deity. I want whatever is up there and out there to protect the troops. This article put them foremost on my mind.

While Bush claims liberation of Afghanis and Iraqis.

Excuse me, we never gave Bush the right to take our kids lives to liberate, He said we were doing it for national security.

Where is OBL?

16. Where is OBL
I agree about sacrificing young lives for half-assed "nation building." Personally, I'm in favor of nation building but it can't be done with guns and bombs. The brutal cynicsm with which the administration used the 9/11 attacks to cover its incompetence and advance its fascist agenda was shameful. Congressional Democrats gave Bush a pass on his "9/11 changed everything" mantra. I still can't understand that. Were Kucinich and Dean the only leaders able to keep their heads when all about them were losing theirs? Why did not a single white senator support the Congressional Black Caucus when they protested the fraudulent election of 2000? I'm starting to ramble...sorry!

20. I believe most of us knew if Bush was deemed president
in 2000, that there would be war. His donors were defense contractors and corporate globalists. He needed to pay them back.

And it wasn't his kids or their kids who would lose their lives.

22. Four U.S. troops injured in Afghan attack
Edited on Mon Jun-13-05 08:00 AM by Spazito
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan — An explosion near a U.S. military vehicle in southern Afghanistan on Monday wounded four American troops, a U.S. military spokesman said, in the latest in a series of bloody assaults on coalition forces.

The vehicle was hit by the blast near the main southern city of Kandahar. A local Afghan police chief said it was a suicide assault. The U.S. military confirmed it was a bombing, but gave no further details.

Spokesman Col. James Yonts told reporters in Kabul that the four wounded, one in a serious condition, were flown to a U.S. base in Kandahar for medical treatment.

He said at least three American troops were killed, but in a statement, the U.S. military said no U.S. service members had died.

Gen. Salim Khan, the deputy police chief for Kandahar city, said a suicide bomber had rammed a car full of explosives into the U.S. vehicle. The head of the attacker was found near the site of the blast and it appeared to be that of an Arab, he said.
