LAT: UFW Plans Wine Boycott in Effort to Pressure Gallo
UFW Plans Wine Boycott in Effort to Pressure Gallo
By Miriam Pawel, Times Staff Writer

The United Farm Workers plans to call on consumers Tuesday to boycott Gallo wine until the company negotiates a more generous contract at its Sonoma winery.

Echoing an appeal made decades ago by Cesar Chavez, the union hopes to gain leverage in the stalled negotiations and also draw attention to the plight of farmworkers hired through middlemen....

***

Boycotts are a tactic long associated with the UFW, but the current one will differ significantly from the legendary campaigns of the 1960s and '70s, which popularized the cause of farmworkers and helped pressure dozens of growers to sign union contracts.

The early boycotts relied on farmworkers and volunteers who fanned out across the United States and Canada to walk picket lines outside stores and urge shoppers to shun businesses selling wine, grapes, lettuce and other nonunion produce.

The UFW's 21st century boycott will rely primarily on Internet networks and e-mail lists from political, labor and environmental groups....

7. Well, before the upscale Sonoma operations began....
The rule of thumb was anything EVERYTHING from Modesto was Gallo - bar none.

4. Do They Even Sell That Stuff Here in California?
I guess it must be on the shelf somewhere, but there's a whole aisle of
wines in every supermarket around here. You can do a lot better than Gallo.

6. Argh! Rancho Zabaco is on the list.
They make pretty good Zinfandels. Oh, well....

My last Gallo boycott was on behalf of artist Joe L Lopez. Casa Ramirez Folk Art in The Heights sponsored a benefit or two.

This painting was inspired by the lawsuit filed against my two cousins and myself by the Gallo Wine Company. I had never been an activist, protestor or a rebel in the Chicano movement, nor was I ever involved in any kind of boycott against grapes or lettuce. Actually I was too busy being a Vato Loco enjoying life to the fullest and getting in trouble. I remember watching César Chávez and all his followers on TV but never really comprehended what it was all about. I just remember being proud to be a Chicano. ..... We were sued because we were trying to trademark the phrase “Puro Gallo” they said the word “Gallo” belonged to them. It was then, when our backs were up against the wall, that people from all over started coming to our aid, because of reading about our dilemma through newspaper articles and on the Internet. Activists, Latino organizations and just plain people many had marched along side César Chávez, all this support finally opened my eyes to “La Causa.” Inspired by a photograph of a farm workers march, “La Causa” pays tribute to the thousands of migrant workers who toiled endlessly with blood, sweat, and tears for a chance at a better life. The skeletons represent the many, many proud people who died for La Causa. Que Viva La Raza!

The case was settled & Puro Gallo is still in business.

10. I Guess Gallo Under Any Other Label is Still Gallo
because none of those wines ever struck me as worth buying.

9. Gallo is really not good compared to the other wines
in Northern Cal. I got really, really sick on one of their brands years ago and have never touched their stuff since. Trust me, you can buy better.
