14. Another Calculated Move to Sabotage...
Given the sensitivity that the North Korean's officials treat Kim's image, this seems more calculated to drive a wedge into ongoing 6 nation negotiations and continue the US move to isolate North Korea.

The highly publized disagreement over the Roh weekend visit between South Korea and the US approaches, show that the US is still bent on derailing any multilaterial settlement.

19. Not a valid comparison...
Bush may be bad, very very bad, but I don't think he is anywhere near as bad as Kim Jong-Il.

The North Korean propaganda I've seen is pretty scary. School children being indoctrinated that "Dear Leader" is responsible for the blessings of food that they eat, and state propaganda holds that he his a living God (or barely one step below that).

Maybe North Korea serves as a warning as how bad things can get, but we (or our so-called "leader") aren't anywhere as far down the path of insanity as they are.

He's many millions of American dead away from being as bad, even if you just count numbers, not percentages.

Juche indeed. A cult of personality that even Stalin would be shocked at, and oppression that Stalin would probably consider unnecessary, counterproductive, and unjustified.

38. Very few predicted the collapse of the USSR.
And those who did were generally scoffed at by nearly everybody on the right and the left.

Even in the late '80s at the U. Oregon most of the Russian students (by which I mean Americans studying Russian) scoffed at the emigre teacher's prediction that the USSR was going to collapse.

36. That's a good point.
Right after the US marched into Iraq, there were some comments from Kim Jong Il. "The US invaded Iraq because they didn't have nuclear weapons". He meant that if you have nukes, the US will leave you alone.

How's that for a deterrent?

41. Okay, I'll bite . . . .
Okay, let's face it - Kim Jong Il might be a little nuts. And it's okay if you think so, too.

But it's an entirely different level of ineptitude to say that that guy might be insane on a nationally televised interview when you're the TOP FOREIGN RELATIONS OFFICIAL in the United States. Isn't it your job to at least pretend to be all nicey-nice toward foreign leaders when you're on TV? It's not like we need even more of the world community being justifiably pissed at us, you know?

Nice going, Madame Secretary . . .

Rice questions whether Kim Jong-il is sane

WASHINGTON:
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on Monday she did not know whether North Korean leader Kim Jong-il was sane, a remark that could anger Pyongyang’s unpredictable ruler.

Asked if she thought Kim was sane during an interview with MSNBC’s “Hardball with Chris Matthews,” Rice replied: “I don’t know. I’ve never met the man.” The interview was taped on Monday and was to be broadcast on Tuesday.

<snip>

The talks between North and South Korea, the United States, China, Russia and Japan have been on hold for a year because of the North’s boycott. Meanwhile, the poor, reclusive state has boasted it possesses nuclear weapons. North Korea is acutely sensitive to what US officials say about it. reuters
