For the Marshfield News-Herald
For Marine Lance Cpl. John J. Mattek Jr., determination was a way of life. It was how he wrestled, how he played football and - after the attacks of Sept. 11 - how he wore the uniform of the U.S. Marine Corps.

Mattek, 24, a 1999 graduate of Antigo High School, died Monday of injuries suffered while fighting in Iraq. A former University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point student and athlete, Mattek was wounded by a roadside bomb Wednesday while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. His parents, John Sr. and Marsha Mattek of Deerbrook, were with their son at a hospital in Maryland when he died early Monday.

I feel for his family, and the families of all the troops serving, and for those who didn't make it.

Even the numbers are getting reported in our local reptilian rag, I read the story yesterday on A3 with big headlines that couldn't be missed.
Before long it'll be on the front page above the fold where it should have been all along.
