Democrat introduces fast-track resolution to rebuke GOP chairman over Patriot Act hearing
RAW STORY

Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) has introduced a privileged resolution in the House which seeks to rebuke House Judiciary Chairman F. James Sensenbrenner (R-WI) for abusing his power at a Patriot Act hearing last week, RAW STORY has learned.

The resolution declares Sensenbrenner "willfully trampled the right of the minority to hold an additional day of hearings," and "willfully and intentionally violated the Rules of the House by abusing and exceeding his powers as chairman."

It moves to have the House condemn the Wisconsin's actions and enjoins the chairman to schedule an additional day of hearings on the Patriot Act.

A furor erupted last week after Sensenbrenner shut off the microphones during a hearing on the Patriot Act, accusing Democrats of raising issues unrelated to the Act such as treatment of detainees at Guantanamo Bay.

18. Just called them -
I started to say, "I'm calling to see if you guys are going to - "

"Cover the Conyer's thing?" he interjected.

"Yeah"

"We don't know the schedule until that day," said he.

"Well, what's your feeling on it?"

"Can't say."

"Have you been getting calls on it?"

"Yes."

"Lots of calls?"

"Oh yes."

Keep it up, people!!!

tried to have Democratic Reps forcibly removed from a library by the Capitol police. The repukes are such a classy bunch. :eyes:

The House That Roared
In Ways and Means Brawl, Names, Police and Sergeant at Arms Are Called

By Juliet Eilperin and Albert B. Crenshaw
Washington Post Staff Writers
Saturday, July 19, 2003; Page A01
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A13376-2003Jul18.html

It started with the mind-numbing reading of a 200-page pension overhaul bill, erupted into a remarkably bitter name-calling match between House Republicans and Democrats, and ended with a GOP lawmaker summoning Capitol Police to evict an outraged gaggle of Democratic colleagues from a congressional library.
snip
In response, Democrats objected to a normally perfunctory motion to dispense with the reading of the dense legislation. A clerk obligingly began reading it line by line, pausing only when Thomas interrupted to announce: "In the House, the minority can delay. They cannot deny."

As the reading resumed, the Democrats departed to a library just off the main hearing room, leaving only Rep. Fortney "Pete" Stark (D-Calif.) to prevent the Republicans from obtaining unanimous consent to skip the reading. After a few minutes, Thomas asked again for the unanimous consent, and instantly brought down his gavel. Stark told reporters he had objected, but Thomas had replied, "You're too late."

Even before Thomas gaveled the reading to an end, he had dispatched the Capitol Police to remove the Democrats from the ornate library. Two officers arrived and, realizing they wanted no part of arresting House members for milling in a library, called a watch commander.

10. I move to AMMEND the Resolution
To put an IMMEDIATE STOP to the practice of disallowing the use of meeting rooms to Democratic-initiated hearings and forums. We have equal rights and deserve equal time to the use of the meeting rooms. The rooms belong to the PEOPLE of the U.S., not the Republican Caucus!

50. YES! :newly redrawn district that pulls in more DEMS!: donate a little!
I thank you for taking the time to look at my campaign and to learn why I should be the next Representative in Wisconsin’s 5th district.

In 2004, I was the Democratic nominee and my campaign performed better than any past Democratic challenge to Jim Sensenbrenner, thanks to a newly-redrawn Republican-leaning district that incorporates large Democratic areas of Milwaukee County. I entered the 2004 race knowing that it was likely to be a “two election cycle” race. I would build a base and name recognition in the first campaign and then come back and win the next time around. We need only look 70 miles to our south to see how Rep. Melissa Bean did the same thing in the Illinois 8th district.

My 2006 theme is “Security, Opportunity, Responsibility.” I believe that my moderate viewpoints are a much better fit for our district than the extremist agenda of our current Representative. I am someone who will defend America, fight for greater opportunities for all, and pledge to be responsible and transparent in my representation.

SECURITY—I support a strong military and wise use of it in protecting America. I will demand a foreign policy that seeks greater cooperation with our allies and diplomacy first. I am not afraid to use America’s military might if it is necessary, but why sacrifice the lives of our brothers, sisters and children when other means might accomplish our goals?

OPPORTUNITY—This country was founded on the ideal of creating opportunities for everyone who is willing to work hard and play by the rules. I believe that we should be rewarding hard work and responsibility and opening doors of opportunity for all. Unlike Mr. Sensenbrenner, I believe that work trumps inheritance. We need healthcare reform, trade reform, and to fix the projected Social Security deficit to guarantee that opportunities are created for our children and future generations.

RESPONSIBILITY—Congress is currently operating in an irresponsible manner with secret meetings, lobbyists writing legislation, unethical behavior and fiscal recklessness. Unlike Jim Sensenbrenner, I am committed to reform. I will fight for balanced budgets, transparency, strong morals and ethics, and to create competitive legislative districts.

46. I called Sensenbrenner today re: 'disappointment' of Conyers meeting tomor
NAIL HIM:

2449 Rayburn House Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20515-4905
Telephone: (202) 225-5101

e mail: sensenbrenner@mail.house.gov

June 15, 2005

I called your office today expressing that I was disappointed that you were not going to allow Rep Conyers and other Dems to have within Congressional chambers a meeting re: the Downing Street memo as associated with (to be presented June 16, 2005, 1 p.m. ESDt) over half a million signatures presented to President Bush.

I also am extremely disappointed that you thought that you could shut down democracy by cutting the microphones off last Friday as Dr. Zogby and Amnesty International were trying to speak up about associated matters.

We're incensed, sir, and we're not stopping.

Sincerely,
