Marines, Iraqis kill Five civilians after Suicide Attack

The suicide car bombing targeted a joint U.S.-Iraqi checkpoint at an entry point into the volatile city of Ramadi, 70 miles west of Baghdad, military spokeswoman Lt. Kate VandenBossche said. One Iraqi soldier was killed in the attack.

Shortly after, two cars sped toward the checkpoint a few minutes apart, both ignoring warning signals to stop from U.S. and Iraqi forces, who then shot at the vehicles believing they could also be suicide bombers, VandenBossche said.

The five Iraqis killed were in the second vehicle shot, which was a station wagon carrying 11 people, the military said.

“Regrettably, there were five civilians killed and four wounded as a result of their vehicles’ charging the ECP (entry checkpoint),” said Col. Robert G. Sokoloski, chief of staff for the 2nd Marine Division.

“The results were tragic, but given the enemy tactic of using multiple vehicle bombs, coalition forces believed the vehicle was another suicide car bomb,” Sokoloski said.

Dr. Mohammed al-Ani of Ramadi General Hospital said six Iraqis were shot dead by coalition forces, including relatives of Jassem al-Kubaisi, director of the treasury department at Anbar province.
