Suicide Bomber Kills at Least 23 Iraqi Soldiers at Army Base
Suicide Bomber Kills at Least 23 Iraqi Soldiers at Army Base North of Baghdad

A man wearing a belt packed with explosives killed at least 23 Iraqi soldiers and wounded 29 others on Wednesday when he blew himself up inside a restaurant on an Iraqi army base north of Baghdad, army officials said.

The lunchtime explosion took place in Khalis, about 12 miles northwest of Baqouba, Iraqi army Col. Saleh al-Obeidi said. Baqouba is 35 miles northeast of Baghdad.

Al-Obeidi said the man was wearing an army uniform and waited until soldiers had gathered for lunch before blowing himself up. The soldiers belonged to the Al-Salam battalion of the 2nd brigade of the Iraqi army in Diyala province.

The injured were being evacuated to a nearby hospital, Iraqi army Maj. Abbas Timimi said.

3. I thought the dead enders
were done. Last I heard they had to duct-tape suicide bomber's feet to the gas pedals of their cars. What, did they duct-tape this guy onto a segway and drive him into the army barracks?

5. This Iraqi "army" will melt away in the face of a rebel offensive.
They are stooges of the occupiers. The only real force that would stand against the rebels is the pro-Iran Badr Brigade, and that's only because it suits their current strategy for an Islamic Republic of Iraq.

6. Sorry but there's no way to see stuff like this other than "Death Throes"
is there? I mean Cheney said that the insurgency is just about finished. This HAS GOT to be a sign of that, right?

Right???

:sarcasm:

8. updated link: Surge of Violence Leaves 52 Dead in Iraq
By PATRICK QUINN, Associated Press Writer
19 minutes ago

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A man wearing an Iraqi army uniform blew himself up Wednesday in a crowded mess hall on an Iraqi army base north of Baghdad, while a suicide car bomber rammed into a police patrol in the capital in two attacks that killed 36 people.

The surge in violence, which left at least 52 people dead around Iraq, appeared aimed at derailing stepped up efforts by Shiite politicians to bring the disaffected Sunni Arab minority into the political process.

In a dramatic house raid, Iraqi and U.S. forces freed Australian hostage Douglas Wood, a 64-year-old engineer held by insurgents for 47 days. Wood, who is married to an American woman and lives in Alamo, California, thanked Iraqi troops for helping free him from insurgents holding him in western Baghdad.

In a message read in Baghdad by Australian counterterrorism chief Nick Warner, Wood said he was "extremely happy and relieved to be free again."
