Indian forced to 'marry' her father-in-law rapist |
|
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20050615/od_nm/india_rape_dc;_ylt=Av9rjTByY.HlVtbM8314HiMuQE4F;_ylu=X3oDMTA3NW1oMDRpBHNlYwM3NTc-NEW DELHI (Reuters) - An Indian rape victim is being forced by village elders to "marry" her rapist -- her father-in-law, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.
Community leaders in Charthawal village, backed by local Muslim clerics, believe that by being raped, 28-year-old Imrana's 10-year marriage has been nullified under Islamic law, The Asian Age newspaper said.
Holding a special council on Sunday, village leaders ordered the mother of five to leave her husband, Noor Mohammed, and live with her parental family for seven months and 10 days and make herself "pure" again, The Age said. It did not say how she becomes pure.
After that, she must "marry" her father-in-law and live with him, along with his legal wife.

Be raped up the ass by ravaging anything in the neighborhood. May they die of infestations under their skin, causing them to scratch their skin off and their raw bloodied muscle be eaten by flies.
I'm not real forgiving about this kind of thing.

What does her "husband" have to say about that? I bet he's a comfort! :sarcasm:
Isn't anyone going to protect her? What about her children? What about the consequences for the rapist?

He gets another wife.
It's just completely impossible for me to bend my mind around the convoluted "logic" of this type of reasoning. How unbearably sad.

Last night I caught part of a PBS special on population growth. There was a story about a 30 year old very poor woman in India who nearly died giving birth to her 8th child. She wants to be sterilized. Her husband won't allow her (even knowing the next birth will probably kill her) to even use birth control because they only have one son and 7 daughters. He wants at least one more son.
Isn't that like attempted murder?
Why do so many men hate and use women like that?

Honestly. At what point should a tribe start weeding out the aggressives? Maybe a few centuries too late, though. :(

but their tradition calls for several sons to take care of them in their old age! At least the sons will take care of him - she won't reach old age.

What proof is there that any son is guaranteed to take care of his aging parents in that part of India? Why would she not reach old age? Unless she is forced to be impregnated again, like some farm animal.
And by the way, the husband was an "only son."

21. How do I know? Well I was not speaking |
|
specifically about this family. I was quoting research regarding populations studies and why birth control is not popular in India. She will not reach old age because like our own ancestors women having one baby after another led to early death statistics for women. In our own history it was not unusual for men to marry 2-3 times because their wives died in childbirth. As to guarantees - who said anything about guarantees? The population study showed that after life saving drugs were introduced the death rate decreased but the tradition of having large families, especially sons, continued because people did not believe the doctors. I was speaking in general not specific.

violence and this is not an unusual case in many countries in this world of ours. Not only are the women blamed but they are punished in ways similar to this. This world is not a nice place to live in when you are a woman.
