Conyers issues statement in advance of hearing; 122 Dems onboard
RAW STORY

Congressman John Conyers (D-MI) issued this statement in advance of his hearing on the Downing Street documents:

#
Few issues are more important under our constitutional form of government than the decision to go to war and place our soldiers lives at risk.

It is no insignificant matter when in the fall of 2002 President Bush told us that war would be his last resort. It is not unimportant when on March 6, 2003, the president promised us, "I've not made up mind about military action."

....

That is why we are here today. That is why 122 Members of Congress -- which as of today includes the Minority Leader -- have asked the president to explain his actions. That is why more than 550,000 Americans are joining with us in demanding answers from the Administration.

We are here because many of us find it unacceptable for any Administration - be it Democratic or Republican - to put our troops in harms way based on false information. The fact that our intelligence turned out to be flawed in no way absolves those who would intentionally mislead our nation or its allies.

15. He just said 104 on Al Franken's show so I'm glad the number is
going up. I'm sure having the House Leadership (Nancy Pelosi) on board increases the people who are willing to sign on.

3. And a lot of intelligence was not flawed, but IGNORED
A lot of experts were IGNORED.

I hope the 'pre-Congressional approval' military actions get mentioned at the hearings today.

16. yahoo: Democrats Question U.S. Pre-War Actions
Democrats Question U.S. Pre-War Actions By PETE YOST, Associated Press Writer
9 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Some congressional Democrats, brandishing a document known as the "Downing Street Memo," are insisting that the White House provide more information about what led to the decision to go to war in Iraq.

Rep. John Conyers (news, bio, voting record), D-Mich., and other Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee were conducting a public forum Thursday, prompted by documents that have surfaced from inside the British government about pre-war planning.

The so-called "Downing Street memo" says the Bush administration believed that war was inevitable and was determined to use intelligence about weapons of mass destruction to justify the ouster of Saddam.

The "intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy," says the memo, recounting a July 23, 2002 meeting of Prime Minister Tony Blair and his national security team. The meeting took place just after British officials returned from Washington.

28. Scotty WH briefing: no one in the White House plans to respond to the lett
Bush should respond to questions raised by the Downing Street memo, says a letter signed by Conyers and over 90 other members of Congress, as well as a half-million Americans.

White House press secretary Scott McClellan dismissed the memo on Thursday and indicated that no one in the White House plans to respond to the letter.

"This is simply rehashing old debates that have already been discussed," he said.

27. Bush didn't believe it, he ordered them to make it up
Welcome to DU Vyan!!!

You should have been here before the invasion. There was plenty of evidence in the mainstream to prove there were no weapons, to prove that Bush knowingly lied during his SOTU speech, and to prove that every one of Colin Powell's points in his speech was based upon evidence that our own military, Pentagon, and Intel had already proven false.

They weren't lied to, they lied. They planned to invade back in 98, when Bush was governor, and they picked Bush as their masthead because he was stupid and had no morals. He didn't choose his foreign advisory team, he was chosen by them. These are the same people who were mad at Clinton in 98 for not supporting the weak attempt at a coup back then. When Clinton rejected their plans, they went to Bush, and ran him.
