Pentagon says Guantanamo critics show 'ignorance'
By Will Dunham
1 hour, 42 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon on Thursday amid mounting criticism of Guantanamo prison invited more members of the U.S. Congress to visit the jail for foreign terrorism suspects and said remarks by some lawmakers showed "a real ignorance of what's really going on."

"We invite more members to go down to Guantanamo and see what's going on, because what's going on down there is not the way it's being described by certain members of Congress," chief Pentagon spokesman Lawrence Di Rita told a briefing.

"And the way they are describing it is unfortunate, and in some places I believe those people will regret having made those kind of comments," Di Rita added.

The Pentagon said it holds approximately 520 men at the Guantanamo prison camp, which was opened in January 2002. Many have been held for more than three years. Only four have been charged. Most were detained in Afghanistan.

9. Wonder how many of these fat cats would be willing to stay ?
The CON idiot from California who compared Gitmo to Club Med and proved that these prisoners were being treated to a luxurious vacation that includes tropical breezes, 5*****dining, full room and board at no expense to......they should just shut up and enjoy this life of luxury.

Bet the chickenhawk politicos that have been elected to oversee all of this wouldn't spend one week in this luxury. They might spend an over-nighter just to produce the photo-op needed for their next campaign run.

The CON Reps are nothing more than the court jesters for the BFEE.

Edited on Thu Jun-16-05 06:15 PM by pinto
there's an ignorance of what's going on!
It's a "no look, no see" prison, fer crying out loud.

Good question anytime Gitmo comes up: How many detainees have been charged with a crime?

10. We'll regret it, will we Mr. DiRita?
You might want to look at who's writing the reports you're so dismissive of, sir. It's the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Just what are you saying they're going to "regret"?

11. Right
They invite members of Congress and put on a BS "Dog and Pony" show,
and assign a guide to take them around pre-designated areas.

Some things never change in the military, believe me, I was involved
in my share of BS tours to make people feel all warm and fuzzy.

12. People being detained for 3 years and not charged, is a GULAG.
Edited on Thu Jun-16-05 06:45 PM by LynnTheDem
It's that simple.

People being detained for 3 years and not charged, is a VIOLATION of US law, international law, and the Geneva Conventions.

It's that simple.

If the FBI says it's a GULAG, then it's a GULAG.

It's that simple.

If the ICRC says it's a GULAG, then it's a GULAG.

It's that simple.

If HRW and AI say it's a GULAG, then it's a GULAG.

It's that simple.

When the PENTAGON's own report says they could face WAR CRIMES charges for their interrogation techniques, then it's a GULAG.

When the US Military's own reports say it's a GULAG then it BLOODY WELL IS A GULAG.

It's that simple.

17. think they are pissed
that all this light is shown on gitmo right before they had to announce the new halliburton gift.

"Alright, we'll go out there say the senators that are badmouthing the prison traitors and that they are hurting our nation by saying these things. Then we'll explain that all the human rights/aid groups that are condemning the prison are left leaning insignificants. Then we will be able to announce our new plan to give Halliburton a fat contract to build a new one and the public will be ok with it. Let's cross our fingers and hope these people are as stupid as they have been in the past..."

15. 4 out of 520 have been charged
Many have been detained for more than three years, without knowing why, probably without their family knowing what happened to them. But hey, it's not a Gulag, so stop saying that.

19. The Hanoi Hilton also arranged tours...
Where they cleaned up the inmates and threatened them with death if they said they were being tortured.

those exhibiting the worst injuries from interrogation were not part of the tour.
