Former South Carolina Officer Charged With Assault in Suspect Beating

FLORENCE, S.C. (AP) -- A prosecutor plans to charge a former Dillon police officer with assault after he was captured on videotape beating a suspect in a traffic stop.

Prosecutor Jay Hodge said he has asked state agents to charge Donnie ''Bubba'' Grimsley with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature and misconduct in office.

''It's my opinion that the video was compelling and that with the statements investigators had gathered, it left no doubt in my mind that charges needed to be brought against him immediately,'' Hodge said.

Grimsley is seen in the video from a patrol car camera kicking and stomping on James Rhodes after a scuffle during a traffic stop at a Dillon apartment complex earlier this month.
