San Jose -- A man San Jose police called "one of the most active child molesters we've ever seen” may have abused thousands of victims in five states, Brazil and Mexico, authorities said today as investigators continued to review "horrendous" log books they said contain more than 36,000 names and notes detailing the crimes he may have committed against them.

The revelation came as police said entries contained within seven notebooks taken from Dean Arthur Schwartzmiller's home stretch back 36 years. Authorities are reconstructing Schwartzmiller's movements during the past 30 years and hope to identify as many of the possible victims so they can pursue criminal charges against the 63-year-old man.

"What is most disturbing ... is that these binders contain thousands of names of children that we believe that Mr. Schwartzmiller may have molested," San Jose police Lt. Scott Cornfield, head of the sexual assault unit, said at a press conference today.

"We know that according to these records, some of these children have been molested multiple times," Cornfield said. "If any of these numbers are even close to accurate, then it is one of the most significant child molestation finds that we have ever encountered."

"If one-tenth of these numbers are accurate, we're looking at hundreds of victims in a number of states. The reason we want to tell the world about this is because we believe he's been involved in child molestations in a number of countries," said Cornfield.

SAN JOSE, Calif. - A convicted child molester jailed in California may have committed sex crimes against thousands of victims, police said Thursday after finding computers, notebooks and meticulous, handwritten lists of boys' names and apparent codes for sex acts.

Schwartzmiller, 63, a convicted child molester, may have committed sex crimes against many thousands of victims in at least five U.S. states as well as Brazil and Mexico, police said Thursday, after finding computers, binders and hand-written records of names and codes indicating sex acts involved.

During a search of his bedroom in San Jose, police discovered binders full of child porn and numerous logs with lists of more than 36,000 children's names - mostly boys - and codes that appear to indicate how he abused them.

A sexual predator accused of molesting two San Jose boys documented in chilling detail more than 36,000 purported sex acts with young boys for three decades in seven states, Brazil and Mexico, police said Thursday in what may be the worst case of abuse they have ever seen.

The logs were found on 1,360 pages in seven spiral notebooks that police seized last month at the San Jose home of Dean Arthur Schwartzmiller, 63, who has been charged with seven felony counts of molestation involving two 12-year-old San Jose boys. The entries contain first names or nicknames such as "Cowboy,'' and some of the names appear repeatedly.

"We know that according to these records, some of these children have been molested multiple times,'' police Lt. Scott Cornfield said at a news conference. "If any of these numbers are even close to accurate, then it is one of the most significant child molestation finds that we have ever encountered.''

Schwartzmiller has a history of child molestation convictions dating to 1970 in Alaska, along with arrests in Oregon, Idaho, New York, California, Arkansas and Washington. His last conviction was in Oregon more than 10 years ago. San Jose police have not determined whether he is a registered sex offender required to check in with local police and appear on the state Megan's Law Web site.

(on edit: corrected my math, adjusted for 35 years rather than 30 years as per the article. also, he has prior convictions, so at least some are genuine.)

i would wonder the circumstances that would enable him to get away with actually doing that, if it's all true.

if it is true, of course, it's heinous in the extreme and he should be locked up forever.

but i sincerely hope they have more concrete evidence, because my first reaction on hearing that number is that his logs are the product of a warped, twisted, and disgusting imagination, rather than a faithful documentation of his daily life.

One other thing that came to mind is, could this be a way of venting so he doesn't actually do all (hopefully any) of these atrocities? Although even if he didn't literally do all that he wrote about and it's "venting" and it's all in his very sick mind that's almost as scarey. Goodness knows I sure as heck wouldn't have wanted him anywhere near my children.

These log books are not records, they're masturbatory fantasies. 36,000? If he was molesting a different kid each day for a hundred years! What, the school bus stopped outside his house and he was able to molest half a dozen a week for a century and no-one noticed?

This guy is an evil man, and needs to be locked up for life, but his victims prbably number in the low hundreds. Horrific, but untypical.
