Howard Dean to travel the world for Democrats |

Edited on Fri Jun-17-05 04:48 PM by truthpusher
http://www.wacotrib.com/hp/content/gen/ap/TX_Democrats_Dean.htmlHoward Dean to travel the world for Democrats ----------------------------- By WENDY BENJAMINSON Associated Press Writer ----------------------------- HOUSTON — Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean said Friday he would travel next year to India, Israel and elsewhere around the globe to show American ethnic communities that he cares more about them than their money.
"We don't want them to just be donors," Dean said after addressing a gathering of Indian-American doctors while on a fund-raising swing through Texas.
"We have very strong support from the Indian community," he said. "I want to show the willingness of the Democratic Party to reach out and respect their traditions."
Dean said he would probably go to India next winter and planned a trip to Israel and other spots around the world.

8. I think that is a very good idea, and the name is perfect. Maybe it could |
|
even be turned into a "travel" book (of sorts) and make some money for us.

2. I'd much rather see him building the ground |
|
game in the 50 state plan for the 2006 election than being a global goodwill ambassador.

5. I'm CertainThere's A Method To His "Madness" :-) |
|
I honestly trust his judgement.
Couldn't imagine him doing this for no good reason.
And it's not like he hasn't been busting his ass traveling around the US since get-go.

9. Agree 100%; we need him at home |
|
As much as I like the idea of Democrats increasing our face time abroad, showing the rational side of American politics to the rest of the world, still, a DNC chair has work to do at home. Firing up the troops, organizing, preparing the groundwork for taking back both houses of Congress, the state houses, etc.
And of course fundraising. Now a scary thought occurs to me, and I am wildly speculating, naturally: Dean isn't going to be fundraising abroad is he? Gore got in trouble with that bigtime in '96, and I have to believe the Pukes and their media lapdogs would be all over the good Doctor if he came home from, say, Monte Carlo, with a pail of money that was not casino winnings. Careful, careful, is all I am saying. Another worry: we don't want to become the party of "other countries." That'd rub some voters (maybe not a minority) the wrong way.

10. It's not an either/or situation. The trips abroad are in addition |
|
to the 50-state strategy, as mentioned in the article.

12. Unless there are two Howard Deans... |
|
...and there may be...
...then any time Dean spends abroad is not in addition to time he is spending in the field, organizing Democrats. It's instead of that.
Maybe he can accomplish something, but as I outlined above, I have my concerns.

13. Sometimes this party is so delusional |
|
And I hope now is not such a time. I hope Dean CAN be in two places at one time. I hope his flying to India and Israel doesn't mean he's missed in Idaho and Iowa.
But don't tell me excitedly about how EXCITING Dean is because he can multi-task. Don't ascribe to the man superpowers that are going to save this party.
We have hard work ahead of us in this country. Not being in the country is, I am afraid, a distraction--at best. Or maybe it's just a vacation.

14. The point is not for any one individual to "save this party." |
|
The point is that the party must save itself.

And I dunno, maybe Terry McAuliffe took trips abroad, too (I don't recall).

To rousing applause, Dean also demanded that President Bush "stop blocking (embryonic) stem cell research.
"Science matters a great deal," said Dean, a physician. "Shouldn't we at least first find out the answers" to whether the research can cure diseases like Parkinson's.
Dean also cited the need for standard practice guidelines to cut down on medical malpractice lawsuits instead of caps on damage awards, and pledged that a Democratic administration would cut back on Medicare and Medicaid regulations.
Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, was scheduled to address the group Friday night, and planned to call for general reforms in laws governing medical malpractice suits. But his prepared remarks also suggested the creation of medical courts, which would be dedicated solely to medical-malpractice suits.
