School board examines flag ban
------------------------------------
The Hernando School Board will consider banning clothing that displays any flag other than the American flag. Some are worried about First Amendment rights.

BROOKSVILLE - Students in Hernando County who want to show their patriotic pride may be limited to the stars and stripes.

The School Board is considering a proposal that would forbid them from wearing apparel that displays any flag other than the American flag.

The proposed ban, which would be unique in the Tampa Bay region, was drafted by a district committee examining changes to the student code of conduct. In addition to barring students from wearing the Confederate flag, the proposal would keep them from wearing the flag of any other country, unless there is "a designated ethnic recognition activity held at the school."

The scope of the flag ban could make it vulnerable to litigation. Becky Steele, director of the West Central Florida region of the American Civil Liberties Union, said it was "overly broad" and would create "serious first amendment problems."

1. A good way to split the opposition is to ask if they'd like to

13. Actually, it's actually not ok to wear an actual US flag as clothing...
;)

US Flag Code doesn't cover other flags and it allows for symbolic (US flag motifs, lapels etc.) or representational flag wearing (design, colors), but not with a real hoist-it-on-your-flagpole US flag.

22. ironic, isn't it?
I remember in the seventies the kids used to get sent home for wearing a flag patch on their jeans. Now flag design is just another market to exploit.

24. it's not ok unless the piece of clothing was purchased at wal-mart
or manufactured by a heavy republican contributor and made in a sweat shop overseas. then, according to the powers that be, it's perfectly allright.

4. They are going to have some problems defining flag
Does that mean it needs to be a rectangular accurately shaped depiction of a flag? If you wear a white shirt with a single red dot, does that count as a flag? What about a white shirt if you accidentally get a round ketchup stain on it? What about if you deliberately put a circle of ketchup on it? What if you wear red pants and a white shirt (poland)?

19. But you can still recover data even then
Personally, I would write a duh_Florida.bat that writes over each individual sector after the format and before the reinstall.

9. Why is it that...
it seems every time that some "school board" or "comitee" has anything to say it the most ass backward thing I have ever heard?! Proud2blib has it right, how about uniforms then? Already in some places groups of 3 or more students that are wearing the same colors are considered a "gang" and rounded up... And did anyone hear about what's going on in Cali schools? I forget who introduced it, but there's a new bill being considered that will no longer allow schools to purchase "instuctional materials" that exceed 200 pages!!! It was in the OC Register last week, an article titled "A Textbook Case of Stupidity" Parents should read it.

12. When they actually do their jobs, you won't hear about it
It's pretty much the same way with anything bureaucratic. Until someone truly fucks up or does something outrageous, the process is fairly dull and (hopefully) transparent to the public at large.

Edited on Fri Jun-17-05 06:24 PM by dicksteele
People are not cheering this nonsense like they were a year ago; these idiots are shooting themselves in the foot with moderate Goppers.

More people are starting to realize that these folks "ain't quite right";

A wheel has fallen off their cart,
they are spinning in a circle...
And their solution is to WHIP THE HORSE HARDER!

Gonna keep an eye on this one!

But I think students should be allowed to wear it on a T-shirt (provided there is no explicitly racist message written on the shirt).

...That has to be one of the most conservative towns I've ever been to in my life...

The spiked kool-aid is in their water supply down there. If you've ever been there, this really wouldn't surprise you at all...

That state is completely effed up. It needs to be cut loose to float off toward Cuba. Then Castro can control their dress code.

30. They should ban US flags on shirts as well
Isn't having the US flag on clothing specifically prohibited as disrespectful?
