Al-Zawahri video calls for armed jihad
Al Qaida’s number two, Ayman al-Zawahri, has released a new video denouncing the US concept of reform and saying armed jihad was the only way to bring change in the Arab world.

The message – al-Zawahri’s first video since February – appeared to be an attempt by Osama bin Laden’s al Qaida to co-opt the rising wave of reform movements in the Middle East.

Al-Zawahri, bin Laden’s Egyptian deputy, was shown in the video, aired on Al-Jazeera television last night, sitting before a plain backdrop with an automatic weapon leant next to him. He wore a white turban and black and white robes. At one point, he glanced to the left at something off-camera.

“The removal of the Crusader and Jewish invaders won’t occur by peaceful demonstrations,” he said in a brief clip aired on the pan-Arab network. “Reform and expelling the invaders from the countries of Islam won’t happen except through fighting for God’s sake.”

3. Welcome to DU, bribri16.
:hi:

No, this isn't that one-legged three times dead guy. This is someone with a name that sounds similar and who was supposedly Bin Laden's spokesperson. He has a long bio of his own.

But, yes, the video is very timely, isn't it? :eyes:

4. And I suppose we would consider what's occurred up until now
'unarmed/peaceful'?

Every day it's becoming more apparent that I need to enroll in an 'English as a second language' course because it's obvious that I don't have a clear grasp of the situation.

5. "co-opt the rising wave of reform movements in the Middle East"
Bwaahaahaahaa ...

I don't think that's exactly what OBL and his minions are trying to do, and there is not any rising wave of reform in the Middle East. There is a rising wave of violence and propaganda, and rising Iranian influence, and rising Islamic resistance movements, but no reform that I can see.

6. Exactamundo!
And isn't it just an amazing coinkydink that Zawahiri pops up to go booga booga right when Bush needs a shot in the old ratings? Why Zawahiri, though? Is Bin Laden still negotiating his public diplomacy contract with Karen Hughes?

Everytime the latest "number 3" guy is captured there is another call for jihad.

We get it. You don't like us, or very many other folks for that matter, either.

number of folks arguing that "jihad" is, crucially, never armed struggle. This, at least, is a good thing.

In fact, there have actually been a few articles that made it to at least the blogosphere on how it went from having "armed struggle" as one of its primary meanings to having that be, for some sects, a trivial, mostly historical meaning. They've even noted some of the instances in which armed struggle is required.

13. Zawahri says peaceful reform impossible
al-Qaeda's deputy leader Ayman al-Zawahri called for an armed struggle to expel "crusader forces and Jews" from Muslim states and said peaceful change was impossible, in a video tape aired by Al Jazeera on Friday.

A calm-looking Zawahri also urged Palestinian militant groups not to lay down arms against Israel or take part in parliamentary polls.

"Expelling the invading crusader forces and Jews from our Muslim homes cannot be realised solely through demonstrations and speaking out in the streets. Reform and expelling the invaders from Muslim countries cannot be accomplished except by fighting for the sake of God," Zawahri said.

"We cannot imagine any reform while our countries are occupied by crusader forces which are spreading throughout our land," said Zawahri, wearing a white turban with a rifle beside him.

18. Usually when a video surfaces from al-Zawahri, a terrorist attack follows.
Generally within several weeks; it is suspected these videos are coded 'go' messages to terrorist cells. There has been recent concern about terrorist threats in Indonesia and in Nigeria. Nigeria is a major supplier of oil, and this is one reason why oil is back up to $58 a barrel.

19. Al-Qaeda says Bush doomed to fail
IRAQ'S Al-Qaeda group has said US forces were doomed to failure in the country, after President George W Bush called the conflict a vital test for American security, according to an internet statement.

"What test of a defeated army are you talking about? You have failed the test and tasted disaster in Iraq," the group led by Jordanian Abu Musab al-Zarqawi said. "Who promised you victory, you loser? "You and the Christians are destined for defeat, as you see every day and everywhere in Iraq," it said in a statement posted on a Web site used by Islamists.

Bush yesterday rejected calls for a withdrawal of US troops from Iraq and tried to counter growing impatience with the war by calling it a "vital test" for American security.

"This lying devil spoke the truth when he said we are the enemies of any rule other than of God and we will only accept His law," said Al-Qaeda Organisation for Holy War in Iraq. "We are the ones who are free, not you Westerners. We are free in our worship of God and in implementing His laws while you are slaves of earthly concerns, falsehoods and the devil."
