London Observer (Sunday): New Bush move to spoil climate accord

New US move to spoil climate accord
By Mark Townsend in New York

Extraordinary efforts by the White House to scupper Britain's attempts to tackle global warming have been revealed in leaked US government documents obtained by The Observer.

These papers - part of the Bush administration's submission to the G8 action plan for Gleneagles next month - show how the United States, over the past two months, has been secretly undermining Tony Blair's proposals to tackle climate change.

The documents obtained by The Observer represent an attempt by the Bush administration to undermine completely the science of climate change and show that the US position has hardened during the G8 negotiations. They also reveal that the White House has withdrawn from a crucial United Nations commitment to stabilise greenhouse gas emissions.

The documents show that Washington officials:
  • Removed all reference to the fact that climate change is a 'serious threat to human health and to ecosystems';
  • Deleted any suggestion that global warming has already started;
  • Expunged any suggestion that human activity was to blame for climate change.

3. Mine has been redlined for years now
I think that is part of their plan. Get us pissed off about so many things that we can't focus on any one of them long enough to do something about it.

10. Well put. That's pretty much how I feel about it
I'm pretty angry at Blair over Iraq. Perhaps he thought he could moderate Bush. Well, he was wrong. Bush is a tyrant in the very same sense of the word that Plato uses it in The Republic. Bush has no loyalty to anyone or anything, no matter how sacred, that stand between him and the satisfaction of his lusts.

27. I certainly hope...
Edited on Sun Jun-19-05 11:52 AM by Gay Green
...that Tony Blair blows up at Bushitler at the G8 Summit in front of everybody including the cameras.

In addition, I hope he...

Vows to pull out of Iraq IMMEDIATELY,

Vows to unleash ANY and ALL remaining documents that reveal that Bush LIED ON IRAQ,

And carries through.

Because according to the findings of http://www.climateprediction.net">ClimatePrediction.net and others, global warming will cause the collapse of the Gulf Stream which will cast Great Britain into an ice age which will prove to be exceedingly short lived - the subsequent additional warming will bring that nation back to its current warmth by 2100 or so.

(edit: ClimatePrediction.net has been taken down because it served its purpose)

9. No doubt about it; they want to kill us all
how can ANYONE call themselves a "Christian" when their goal is to destroy all of creation for a fistfull of gold? Do they relish the thought of being "the last generation", or do they think that they can put a gun to God's head by destroying the earth, thereby forcing Him to bring back Jesus?

...to take his new job at Exxon/Mobil. Either that, or the same guy that leaked the EPA documents last week.

21. You mean the US is "fixing" the facts to fit the policy?
This is beyond ridiculous that they can change the wording in scientific reports to make them say what they want and NO ONE notices. Their base seems quite content that they are corrupt. How can they justify it in their own minds? It is just so painfully obvious to the rest of the entire world but not to GOP America. Are they truly that evil or just that stupid?

22. That's about what it means
It's the regime's modus operandi. It's what they mean when they say An empire creates its own reality. If they ignore facts, that makes them false. That's how one creates a reality.

Artists and writers have the luxury of creating their own reality. Policymakers don't. As Lenin said, Facts are very stubborn things.

26. Kick out anti science Republicans-- if you love this planet !
Enough is enough, i hope !! It will take determination to overcome all the anti-science shouting of the corporate media. Exxon Mobil has paid millions of dollars to push the 0.001% of scientists who doubt the need for urgent action to ameliorate the devastating impacts of global climate change.

29. Bush's depraved indifference to the environment
begs the question...what kinds of response are morally justified against those who shamelessly kill not only innocent civilians today, but ensure the deaths of uncountable innocents in the future?
At the very least, I feel justified in keying every Hummer I see in the hopes of driving insurance rates through the roof. At most, I sincerely hope that Bush and company die horrible deaths, soon.
IS THAT SO WRONG?

Just before WWII the leader of Britain got off an airplane and held up a piece of paper that he thought would appease Hitler. He turned out to be wrong.
