KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (Reuters) - Taliban guerrillas said they executed a district police chief on Sunday who was among 31 people they were holding prisoner in Afghanistan's troubled southern province of Kandahar. snip

A senior police officer said on Saturday that Taliban guerrillas captured 30 policemen and a district chief in attacks on Thursday and Friday on Mian Nishin, a district in the north of Kandahar province, and took over the main government building.

Taliban spokesman Abdul Latif Hakimi said district police chief Nanai Khan, the senior policeman captured, was shot dead with three bullets on the orders of Taliban religious leaders. snip

Hakimi said the officer's body had been dumped at a village in Mian Nishin named Shai Khan. "The government can come and pick up his body," he said.

3. What has been accomplished? We transformed the Taliban from
a symbol of oppression to a symbol of hope and freedom for the people of Afghanistan.

The real question to me is what the Hell Bush thought he would accomplish, because anyone who ever scored above an 88 in history could have told him that war doesn't change political realities, it only kills people.

4. Their emir spoke.
And implemented the law.

Not any law that we here would support, but the law, as they believe it.

From my perspective, they captured somebody they considered to be an enemy combatant, and executed him days later.

5. reuters: Taliban execute police chief, 7 others, hold 23
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (Reuters) - Taliban guerrillas said they executed a district police chief and seven other policemen on Sunday out of 31 police they were holding prisoner in the troubled southern Afghan province of Kandahar.

The capture and killing of the men has created a fresh crisis for authorities in Kandahar, the province worst hit by a surge of violence in recent months that has raised fears for parliamentary elections on Sept. 18.

In separate violence in neighboring Helmand province, guerrillas killed a judge, an intelligence official and a guard in the district of Anad-i-Ali to the west of the provincial capital Lashkargah on Friday night, a provincial spokesman said.

Overnight, three rockets hit the city of Kandahar, one of which seriously wounded two children, police said.
