Bush refusing to budge on private accounts …hopes to salvage policy on SS
Bush refusing to budge on private accounts
He hopes to salvage unpopular policy on Social Security

Washington -- President Bush has gone from threatening Democratic lawmakers that they'll suffer politically for not supporting his Social Security overhaul to cajoling Republican lawmakers with promises of campaign help if they do.

Neither tactic is working. Bush's poll numbers continue to sink, driven in part by his plan to add private accounts and reduce benefits in the giant retirement program.

Democrats appear on the verge of scoring a huge political victory over Bush by defeating what had been the centerpiece domestic policy of his second term.

Bush's hopes of salvaging even small private accounts now rest entirely on the two Republican leaders of the committees in charge of Social Security: former college professor Rep. Bill Thomas of Bakersfield, the shrewd and unpredictable chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee who is a master of the tax code and entitlement programs, and blunt-spoken Iowa farmer Sen. Charles Grassley, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee.

Both men face unbroken Democratic opposition and disagreement and resistance within their own party.

6. I wonder how long it will be before people just stop listening to him
He has been flailing about for so long that some might start to feel that if you want honest answers, or even the right questions, Bush isn't the man to go to.

It would be about time.

7. Hard to give in when you are sure you are right. And he -----
does seem to think he is always right, I guess it is sort of proof of how unsure he is of what he thinks.

I think it's in the New Testament somewhere. Right next to the passage about oil wells in Israel.

13. Savings and loan scandal, retirement fund bankruptcies, stock market
bubble burst, housing market bubble about to burst, Social Security fund. The thing that all of these have in common is all of us hard working stiffs struggling to put money in places we bought were safe only to find the corporate elite rating the piggy banks and getting filthy rich. They want it all. Every last dime. They want to break us all down to the point where we are at the indentured servants beholden to the company store. We have to stand firm on this one.:grr:

15. Sadly, Mom Cat, I agree
There really seems to be no end to their greed. Having money enough to live like royalty for several lifetimes isn't enough. It's more than them just always wanting more, more, more, when they have so much now...they want to take every last cent away from the rest of us.

What do they lack in their souls, to be so filled with greed and drunk with power? Bush is a perfect example of that kind of thinking. They are destroying America more completely than 100 Osamas could have done.
