U.S. spending on Iraq may soon surpass Korean War budget
-----------------
Last Updated Mon, 20 Jun 2005 15:45:52
-----------------
Lawmakers in the United States were scheduled to vote on Monday to approve $45 billion US in additional funding for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, making the recent Middle East foray more expensive than the entire Korean War.

Since the Sept. 11 attacks, Congress has approved $350 billion, mostly for combat and reconstruction in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The amount, which includes $82 billion approved last month, is equal to the total amount in today's dollars spent on the Korean conflict from 1950-53.

More than 54,000 U.S. troops were killed and 103,000 wounded in that conflict when the U.S.-led United Nations force pushed back a North Korean invasion into South Korea.

1. Things were different back then
Back in the early 50's, a billion of today's dollars went further than it does today because ... well, because it wasn't mostly earmarked to line the pockets of Truman's cronies.

An Associated Press-Ipsos Reid poll put support for President George W. Bush's handling of the war at 41 per cent, a new low.

3. Odd that those millionaire high level government/corporate people
estimated it at 2-3 billion. Goes to show you how little they know when their bullshit is actually put to the test of reality.

5. They knew how much they wanted to spend, but couldn't get approval
unless they said it would be cheap. If they'd said they'd bankrupt the country, few would have approved. Gotta soft-sell everything, then roll out the actual plan when it's too late.

Of course, Bush later said "we'll spend whatever we have to". Haha, he's mocking us. Cha-ching and so forth.

4. Consider it wealth redistribution for war profiteers...
After the 1990's there were just too many people getting rich off the wealthy. People were forgetting about the importance of war. Something had to be done.
