Mass. Gov. Considering Presidential Bid

Tuesday June 21, 2005 4:01 PM

By THEO EMERY

Associated Press Writer

BOSTON (AP) - Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who has spent the last several months addressing Republican loyalists around the country, acknowledged on Tuesday that he's considering a presidential bid in 2008.

``If someone said, well, you know, the governor's testing the national waters, that's a fair characterization,'' Romney said. ``But I'm planning on running for governor. Time will tell, I'll make a final decision and an announcement in the fall, and we'll go from there.''

Romney, a former venture capitalist who headed the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, won that year's race for governor in Massachusetts.

He has recently spent time in South Carolina, Michigan and California to talk to Republicans. In those speeches, he has cast himself as a social conservative on issues such as same-sex marriage and embryonic stem-cell research.

2. He is delusional
if he thinks the republicans would ever nominate ANYONE from Massachusetts. He must be in this to raise his profile in order to get better lobbying jobs after he leaves the governors post. You know - run a lavish campaign, write a book, get paid a lot to be a corporate lobbyist; at least he is smart enough to be president, even if he has no shot.

President. Further, he's a Mormon, which would be looked upon with great suspicion by the fundie crowd. I don't think his ties to Mass. help him with wingnuts either.

I think the way the BFEE is shoving George "Noose" Allen to the forefront, lately, is very telling. I think he's the preferred stooge of the Bush Crime Family in 08.

4. Well he probably won't be governor in '08
Things aren't looking up for him for '06, so he'll probably be looking for a job anyways.

5. Don't shortchange
Anyone with any religious denomination in their life! Many churches are sitting ready to support their own factions through political people in power. They have seen the writing on the wall through this false god regime! They are still tax free and preaching political policy at every hand! Don't empower them ever again! Religion is more money corrupt today than Enron or any other corporation!

9. Mittens
Hi. I have lurked here for a while, but this is the first time I've posted:

This man is such a miserable Failure as a gov, that if he got the nomination, Al Sharpton could beat him. Won't happen though, a guy who can't even pass legislation in his own (note I didn't say 'home') state.

Useless carpetbagger.

Pay up or get out: Gov reveals health plan

By Brett Arends/Herald Exclusive
Tuesday, June 21, 2005 - Updated: 04:55 AM EST

Gov. Mitt Romney doesn't just want to make health insurance universal.
He wants to make it compulsory.

In an opinion piece published in today's Herald, the possible
presidential contender pushes the ball way upfield in the healthcare
debate by calling "for a personal responsibility principle" in health
insurance.
"Everyone must either become insured or maintain an adequate
savings account to cover their medical expenses
," Romney writes.
The argument: that would cut out free-riders who use today's
system without paying for it. ``We cannot expect some citizens to pay
for others who can afford to pay some or all of their own way,'' he
writes.

13. Something from "Live Free or Die" New Hampshire, I Think
The phrase "Live Free or Die" has nothing to do with freedom, of course,
it refers to the Heart-of-Granite State's attitude towards the poor.

How did this toad ever get elected in Massachusetts??

15. Actually, folks like Romney are the real enemy looking ahead to 08
Congressional GOPers and anybody in the Smirk admin will have to chose between distancing themselves from Smirk (won't play with the GOP base) or playing up their record in/propping up the Bush admin (disastrous in the general unless something bizarre happens in the next 3 years to turn Smirk's popularity around). But "moderates" like Romney who have been governors can say that they're "a different kind of Republican" a "true compassionate conservative" etc etc etc bs etc. The media will eat it up - - they're already shilling big time for McCain and Guilliani.

The fact that Romney is the gov. of MA is not a liability, in my book. The GOP will use it as a sign that they're a truly national party, that they win in Dem strongholds, that they're the real party of inclusion etc etc etc bs etc.

Book it.

19. Mass. Governor Weighing Presidental Run

Mass. Governor Weighing Presidental Run

The Associated Press
Thursday, June 23, 2005; 11:36 AM

BOSTON -- Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who has acknowledged that he is considering a presidential run, said his wife's health is his main concern as he weighs his political future.

"Any reversal of her good health would almost certainly mean getting out of public office. I wouldn't run for another campaign, almost certainly," Romney said Thursday in an interview with The Associated Press.

Ann Romney, who has multiple sclerosis, a degenerative nerve condition, is currently in good health. But when the governor was asked how he would decide whether to run for re-election next year or seek the presidency, he cited her health as the top factor.

"She's got a long-term chronic condition, and she's very well, but that's always the first consideration," he said.

25. He ran as a moderate, but is really a neo-con
I didn't vote for him. But the MA State House and Senate is so heavily Democratic, that some people believe electing Repug governors keeps things balanced. Unfortunately, Mittens campaigned as a moderate, and the voters bought that lie.

if the polls says he has a chance she is will. How convenient for him to have his wife to blame for a defeat!

24. What about Senator Mitt Romney?
Kennedy's getting old. If he doesn't retire in 2006, he will in 2012. If Kennedy retires before 2006, look to Romney to run for Senate.

Of course, he'll lose, but that's still my prediction.

26. Kennedy's not retiring
Kennedy will retire when they carry him off Capitol Hill feet-first. His 2006 reelection campaign is in full swing, with no Rethug opponents in sight.
