Poll: Nelson would defeat Harris for U.S. Senate in Florida

A new statewide poll confirmed what many Republicans had feared: Katherine Harris is as controversial now as she was in 2000.

BY LESLEY CLARK

Miami Herald

TALLAHASSEE - U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson would easily defeat Republican challenger U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris if the 2006 Senate election were today, according to a new poll that underscores the queasiness some Republicans feel about a Harris candidacy.

The Mason-Dixon Polling Research survey shows the freshman Democratic senator cruising to a second term with 53 percent of the vote in 2006, compared to just 36 percent for Harris, who has a favorable rating just two points higher than her unfavorable rating, the poll shows.

The poll of 625 registered voters was conducted June 14-16, just days before reports surfaced that Gov. Jeb Bush and the White House were prodding state House Speaker Allan Bense into challenging Harris in the GOP primary.

The results provide a window into GOP fears that Harris -- whom some Democrats believe tilted the 2000 presidential election to George W. Bush when she served as Florida secretary of state -- remains controversial and would motivate Democrats to turn out to vote against her, potentially affecting the other races on the ballot, including the governor's race

1. Hardly surprising...
I've been saying all along that Harris has no chance in a statewide election. She can win in a safely Republican district, but that's as far as her political career can possibly go. Too many people in the mushy middle see her the same way the Dems do -- as a treacherous GOP apparatchik.

6. The GOP Will FIX The Votes Around Their Candidate
Karl's minions are already working on the AP story about here
"miraculous, come-from-20-points-behind victory", and trying to
come up with some plausible explanation for it.

2. Never underestimate the power of
the GOP to tamper with the vote. Next November the whores may well be trumpeting Harris's "amazing come-from-behind upset."
