Wolfowitz to focus on women in poverty, development in Africa

BY KEVIN G. HALL

Knight Ridder Newspapers

WASHINGTON - (KRT) - World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz pledged Tuesday to make reducing poverty in Africa and improving the lot of poor women everywhere his top priorities.

....

Wolfowitz declined to answer questions about the Bush administration's planning for war in Iraq but said the local news media would be important to achieving his goals in Africa.

"You can't talk about fighting corruption if you have a press that's totally muzzled. In fact I think one of the greatest weapons against corruption is fresh air and the light of day," he said. "Corruption doesn't survive very well when it is exposed, and having a free press that is able to expose it contributes to development."

....

In his first meeting with a broad group of journalists since stepping aside as deputy defense secretary at the end of May, Wolfowitz, a co-architect of the U.S.-led war in Iraq, declined to discuss the so-called Downing Street memos.

....

"I haven't read the memo," Wolfowitz said

....

Wolfowitz stressed on Tuesday that he's looking forward, not back.

"I tell you, no one I met in Africa, no African at least, wanted to talk about Iraq," he said.

2. I can't believe it.....
did Wolfie actually say this?:

"You can't talk about fighting corruption if you have a press that's totally muzzled. In fact I think one of the greatest weapons against corruption is fresh air and the light of day," he said. "Corruption doesn't survive very well when it is exposed, and having a free press that is able to expose it contributes to development."

Surely not.

3. Oh, the irony!
He's praising a free press and yet he did everything he could to stonewall the press while he was in DOD....lying piece of sh&t!

Oh, and one more thing.....Wolfie couldn't get a date in DC so now he's going to hand out money to women in developing nations.....does he think that's going to work for him? Something reminds me of the joke...something to do with woman's prison and a handful of pardons....

4. by the way....
Do we need any greater proof that the DSM is authentic than having members of this tight group saying, "I haven't read the memo."?

5. Ew, YAK!!!
Wolfowitz, the neoCON corporacrat, feigns compassion for poor, African women. :eyes:

Let's be honest, Wolfo,...you serve an ideology wrapped around corporatism that precludes any genuine sense of compassion for anyone.

GO - TO - HELL!!!! :grr:

6. Gee? Is he taking credit for the notion? Just like Bush taking credit
for the "idea" of democracy (and after US policy went directly against democracy in the Middle East for 40 years longer than it did with Africa). Neocons love their myths. "Girl-child education" has been the #1 policy in the development game for 25 years.

As long as your average red state person has no idea about the history or the facts..they will think Wolfowitz is a genius.

***hole!
