Florida Democratic Party faces IRS lien; $900,000 shortage
By BRENT KALLESTAD
Associated Press Writer

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Broke and without enough money in the bank to pay its bills after the end of the month, the Florida Democratic Party has now been slapped with a lien by the Internal Revenue Service for failing to pay payroll and Social Security taxes in 2003.

Meanwhile, the state party's budget and finance committee voted Tuesday to ask for a new audit to account for more than $900,000 it believes somehow disappeared from the books during the 2003-2004 calendar years when the party was led by Scott Maddox, who is now seeking its nomination for governor.

Maddox said Tuesday that he would accept responsibility for any errors made by either his staff or the auditing firm at the time has was chairman, said his campaign strategist, David Beattie of Fernandina Beach.

3. I live in Florida and belong to our county dem party chapter
Attended a meeting tonight and nothing was brought up about this. Our chairperson is very involved and informed and also very open with members about sharing information, especially if it is on the state level. Nothing at all was mentioned about this. Scott Maddox was here last night for another meeting which I was unable to attend.
At this point I am inclined to think that it is a "bookkeeping matter" that will be resolved, as mentioned in the article.

4. "bookkeeping matter"?
Do bookkeeping matters usually get this much attention in AP?

This is definitely a smear.

5. Most of the bush/cheney bumper stickers have recently disappeared
and lots of bushit stickers have started to appear, so I guess it is time for the floggings to begin.

6. More than 1/2 the registered voters are Democrats.
In 2000, my Democratic dad heard nothing from the party. We sure did get a lot of phone calls and junk from the repubs. (I'm registered independent). This last time I think we heard from them. Actually, it was hard to care. 3 hurricanes and no electricity or phones kind of put other things at a higher priority.

I did some telephone calls for the Democrats, but one the hurricanes started that was over.
