Troops swim against sea of Iraqi munitions
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Inspectors had little luck finding weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, but when it comes to the ordinary kind — mortars, rockets, guns and bullets — U.S. forces can barely deal with all they recover.

In the past three weeks alone, at least 20 major weapons caches have been discovered around the country, including one containing 60 rockets, 88 mortar rounds, two dozen rocket- propelled grenades (RPGs) and a French guided missile.

That came two days after an underground bunker the size of six football fields was uncovered near Baghdad, stuffed with artillery rounds, mortars, machineguns and AK-47s.

The finds are touted as a success by U.S. forces, although at the same time there is little sign that insurgents opposed to the U.S. presence in Iraq, and bent on overthrowing the government, are running out of weapons. Attacks continue daily.

3. As the US gets weaker, our enemies will grow bolder
There may be more than a few countries
mulling the possibility of hitting back at the
US through supplying Iraq. NK, Syria, Russia, Iran,
perhaps even China.
(And I certainly would not put it past Sharon
to supply Iraq with weapons - what better way to keep
the battle raging?)

5. Many Ho Chi Minh trails will emerge in the near future
It appears all roads lead to Iraq, the Cradle of Civilization. Need I remind Bushco of Iran, Syria, Russia, China....the list is long.

6. brilliant assessment here...
~snip~

"Iraq sometimes seems like just one big weapons dump," said Lt. Ronald Flesvig, a U.S. naval officer in Baghdad who deals with weapons cache issues.

"I don't know when we'll get closer to the end of it all, there's just so much. It's almost impossible to say."

... I notice there is NO mention in the article of the hundreds of tons of explosives that went UNSECURED for months and were looted.

7. In 1/04
An American general said there were 695,000 TONS of munitions unacounted for. That's 7 aircraft carriers. So much for "shock and awe".

9. Qaaqaa had some nasty stuff.
But the sea of arms caches that were hidden all over Iraq was something else entirely. Would have taken a couple of divisions just to secure them all, even *if* we knew where they were all located.

Not WMD, but MWD: mass weapons of destruction. (In an attempt to be witty
