Gender gap tilts back toward the Democrats

Gender gap tilts back toward the Democrats
By David Cook | Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor

WASHINGTON – The gender gap is showing signs of returning as men and women voters react to Republicans in markedly different ways.
The trend is potentially troublesome for the GOP's bid to maintain control of Congress in 2006. And it echoes other recent polling data that shows voters unhappy about issues closely tied to President Bush, including the war in Iraq.

In 2000, Mr. Bush performed strongly among women voters, winning an estimated 48 percent of their ballots cast. It narrowed the traditional gender gap in which men have favored Republicans and women Democrats.

But a new poll suggests that the women who helped reelect Bush may now be pulling back from the Republican Party. A nationwide survey of 2,613 voters conducted in May by Garin-Hart-Yang Research found 43 percent of women would support a Democratic candidate in the 2006 congressional elections versus 32 percent who would back a Republican.

Male voters still narrowly favor a Republican congressional candidate, producing a 16-point gap between the genders - a bigger one than in the 2004 Congressional election (14 points) and sharply higher than in the last midterm election in 2002 (5 points).

I think they realized that if you're living in a Frigadaire box behind a Home Depot then it's kinda stupid to be worrying about terrorism because they're is nothing left to terrorize.

3. Hopefully really stupid
All the information was out there. There really was no excuse to vote for bush, or any of the many disgusting candidates offered by the rebublican party. It seems that so many refused to think, just..refused. I'll never understand it.

4. Without an election near, things can go back to normal.
One is concerned that Diebold will re-tilt the table as the need arises, though. Results like this only add to suspicion that there was significant fraud int the 2004 vote counting.

Bush loses support among women, poll says
So far, however, the shift isn't necessarily benefiting Democrats.

By Margaret Talev -- Bee Washington Bureau
Published 2:15 am PDT Thursday, June 23, 2005

WASHINGTON - A national survey finds many women have turned against President Bush and the Republican Party - more so than male voters - as they have grown displeased with the war in Iraq, plans to change Social Security and what they see as inappropriate political intervention in personal or family decisions.
"The gender gap is back, and it is healthy," said Ellen Malcolm, president of Emily's List.

The group, which raises money to elect Democratic women who support abortion rights, released its findings Wednesday based on a survey of more than 2,000 women conducted last month by Democratic pollsters.

"We see the erosion that has now been appearing in many polls for the Republicans is almost solely attributable to the shift of women voters."

10. That he ever had it is troubling to me.
I looked at some stats in my state (Tennessee) yesterday for something else and found that women - more than men! - (55 percent of women and 45 percent of men) supported the dumb fuck in the last election.

WHY?

I simply don't get it. He kills our children in needless wars, he takes away our reproductive rights, he lies, he's not the least bit attractive and he's not intelligent.

11. Rove is good at scaring mommies.
That's what got Bushie the women vote.

I'll guarantee if HRC becomes the nominee, the election will be about men vs. women.

14. fear mongering re Iraq and OBL were only reasons they liked him.
Since there hasn't been much fear mongering lately, their support has dropped.

But I don't doubt that Rove believes they can dial that support back up once they dial up the fear, if they need to.

Bush performed strongly -- at 48%! That means, he didn't get the ghostlike soccer mom vote. So before we wonder why these women favored Bush, notice that they didn't.

And do you remember that right after the election, in fact the very next weekend, wingnut pundits were telling us why Bush won the Latino vote and why young people stayed home?

None of it turned out to be true. Kerry got the Latino vote and there was a significant increase in the youth vote (although I can't remember the numbers, sorry).

I don't understand this reporter's take on the whole situation but I know we have to be really careful with these reports because they change the way WE think about ourselves -- often through spin, not fact.

16. There is NO EXCUSE
...for a woman who votes Republican. They can't even plead ignorance. It doesn't wash. If they're even half paying attention, they will never EVER vote for a Republican.
