Massive Crack Opens In Earth In Texas
Edited on Thu Jun-23-05 07:58 AM by Minstrel Boy
It just sounds like an Onion headline...

Massive Crack Opens In Earth In Texas

June 23

CLAUDE, TX -- A massive crack in the earth opened up last week in Claude, Texas and its creating a stir among geologists.

Geologists said Tuesday the crack was a joint in the earth's crust. They believe the opening is the result of a weak point in the joint where one spot slips away from the other.

Some parts measure more than 30-feet deep and it drained what use to be a pond. Experts say earth cracks are common but the size of the crack in Claude is not.

Maybe being Texas and all watching to see if the (f)undies will go crazy.

Maybe another will open up in crawford... one can hope.

Since we can't get an impeachment, I'd settle for crawford being swallowed up.

10. This one's near Amarillo & a bit farther from Lubbock.
Which is bad enough, even when the earth does not open up.

There's some seismic activity in Texas, but many more "surface faults." They don't slip suddenly & cause earthquakes, but their slow movement can damage buildings, bridges & roads.

The lack of rain in Texas this year has people harking back to the Dust Bowl. I guess we should be glad that Houston hasn't flooded this year--but it's getting pretty dry.

Our asscrack is showing.

on edit:
Actually I'd meant to respond to the original post.

But as long as I'm here, normally, oil comes out of porous rock, not huge underground caverns, so what happens when the oil comes out is that the rock just gets less 'dense', not create pockets that can collapse.

However, I do remember some stories out of Mexico in the 80's that described the ground sinking a few feet in some oil production areas due to the massive removal of oil.

49. It's a real problem.
For people living on or near oil wells. There have been numerous solutions played around with, for example, pumping in sea water to fill the holes, each with their own drawbacks. Don't know what kind of solution is popular now.

51. No need to
As the oil is pulled out, saltwater replaces it. There is no void. The well eventually quits producing oil, and just produces saltwater.

46. Similarly in Russia, a lake disappeared (May 20, 2005)

Vanishing lake baffles Russians

Residents of a village in central Russia are trying to solve the mystery of a lake that disappeared overnight.
Russia's NTV channel showed a huge, muddy basin where the lake once was, in the village of Bolotnikovo.

"It looks like somebody has pulled the plug out of a gigantic bath," said the TV's correspondent, next to a deep debris-filled hole.

Local officials in Nizhny Novgorod region say the lake was probably sucked into an underground cave.

<snip>
But one elderly villager sitting outside her house had another kind of force in mind.

"I thought the Americans had got here," she said, laughing.
