US not losing in Iraq, Rumsfeld insists
Edited on Thu Jun-23-05 12:03 PM by maddezmom
15 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld assured lawmakers in Congress that US troops are defeating the stubborn insurgency in Iraq, and rejected calls that the Pentagon scale back the military presence there.

"Any who say that we've lost this war, or that we're losing this war, are wrong. We are not," said Rumsfeld, who appeard with his top military commanders at a hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Rumsfeld noted that some in Congress have suggested that deadlines be set for a US withdrawal, but he rejected that idea as counterproductive to US military objectives, and said it would only embolden the United States' enemies.

"It would throw a lifeline to terrorists, who in recent months have suffered significant losses and casualties, been denied havens and suffered weakened popular support," he said.

"The Iraqi security forces, for example, are vastly more competent, and in some cases quite inspiring."

Yeah, well, according to Washington Post journalists who spent some time recently with an Iraqi army unit, they hate the Americans and sing songs to Saddam's praise, while they admire the insurgency and mostly plan to join it...

8. Hey Rummy remember McNamara? He used to say
Edited on Thu Jun-23-05 12:15 PM by nadinbrzezinski
that we were winning in Viet Nam as well...

Or... Lord Acton? I Know the reference is really obscure to you MoFo... he said the same things to Parlaiment in the 1920s

Now McNamara lived long enough to ahem admit, you know what I think Ellsberg was right... Lord Acton did not... but let me seee how did Nam end? Did yuo miss the choppers over the US Embassy at Saigon? How did the British Misadventure end in Iraa? Took a little longer, unless you add the fight against the French in Viet Nam as well... but in the end the brits also left... they got tired of the explosive laced candies you know. (That was in 1955... I am sure the grandparents of some of the Guards in Iraq remember that deployment well... the Regiments have had families serving consistently over the centuries)

So I hope you have the years to realize, assuming you will be able to, I doubt it... we made a mistake.

Oh and it is our kids paying for it... when are your kids joining the line infantry to fight tnis war?

12. How many legs does a dog have if you call his tail a leg?
Four; calling his tail a leg doesn't make it one. And stubbornly repeating over and over that we're not losing doesn't make it so, either.

But if this is what victory looks like to Rumfilled, I'd hate to see what he calls defeat. And Rumfilled, as much as anyone, should understand that a dedicated bunch of ruffians, thugs, murderers and monkey-wrenchers don't need popular support to be successful.

Just like in Vietnam, they know we can't stay there forever. We might as well pull back to Kuwait/Qatar, let the civil war play itself out, and support the side we want to win (Shia/Kurd coalition) and let them kill off the foreign jihadists.

Take the target off our guy's backs for a couple of years and get outta the quagmire for awhile.

44. Now, go to the article (I read it on Yahoo News)
Take a close look at RumsFailed. Look at both sides of his face (I know, it's tough).

What you see is a defeated man. Is that a look of triumph? A man who has carried his country through tough times, and on to victory?

I think not. It shows in his face. Regardless of whatever he may say to the committee, his look told me everything I needed to know. He doesn't need to lie, because it's all there.

He doesn't need to do a "Pep Talk". Nor does Bush, which he is going to do anyway.

Everything about the insurgency is to be found in this man's face.

50. And cheney said this..
on russert's gag fest, March 16, 2003..

"Host Tim Russert asked whether "we would have to have several hundred thousand troops there" in Iraq "for several years in order to maintain stability." Cheney replied: "I disagree." He wouldn't say how many troops were needed, but he added that "to suggest that we need several hundred thousand troops there after military operations cease, after the conflict ends, I don't think is accurate. I think that's an overstatement."

Russert asked: "If your analysis is not correct, and we're not treated as liberators but as conquerors, and the Iraqis begin to resist, particularly in Baghdad, do you think the American people are prepared for a long, costly, and bloody battle with significant American casualties?"

Cheney would have none of it. "Well, I don't think it's likely to unfold that way, Tim, because I really do believe that we will be greeted as liberators. I've talked with a lot of Iraqis in the last several months myself, had them to the White House. . . . The read we get on the people of Iraq is there is no question but what they want get rid of Saddam Hussein and they will welcome as liberators the United States when we come to do that."

Russert: "And you are convinced the Kurds, the Sunnis, the Shiites will come together in a democracy?"

Cheney: "They have so far." And the vice president concluded: "I think the prospects of being able to achieve this kind of success, if you will, from a political standpoint, are probably better than they would be for virtually any other country and under similar circumstances in that part of the world."

more..

They all follow the same bullshit line so this is just more bullshit coming from "last throes" cheney and rummy.
