Blix: Iran Years Away From Nuke Weapons
STOCKHOLM, Sweden - Former chief U.N. weapons inspector Hans Blix said Thursday it would take many years for Iran to achieve the capability to produce highly enriched uranium needed for an atomic bomb.

Blix also dismissed worries about a new nuclear reactor being built in Iran, saying it was not suitable to produce weapons-grade material.

"They have many years to go before they will be able to produce highly enriched uranium for a bomb and I believe there is plenty of room for negotiations," Blix said in an interview with Swedish Radio.

The U.S. has accused Iran of trying to make nuclear arms, but Tehran says its nuclear program is for generating energy.

8. We are in a strange time...
any other era of my lifetime - the credibility problems of the admin and the real financial and human resources constraints would prevent any action from happening - public is getting savvier to their gaming - and starting to be aware of the constraints.

But this administration is so disconnected from reality and driven by self-righteous and "invincibility" ideology... that they might actually pursue actions even though to do so is insane.

5. Ok, I've always wondered this...
Why is the US so concerned about other countries, especially Mid Eastern countries having nuclear power? Maybe Iran just wants to step up their energy and economy? What if their intentions are benign? Why is it any of the US's business that other countries have nuclear power?
Or are they really a threat?

I don't know, it just seems that the US is going around saying, nobody else but us can have big bad weapons and a good electrical power source.

If someone can answer this well, rather stupid question I'd appreciate it.

7. Nuclear weapons in the hands of an oil-bearing
state would make it almost impossible for neocons to intervene militarily in order to keep the oil "controlled" if they perceived (or instigated) a crisis of some sort.

19. Hysterical America
I saw the German, French and British ambassadors to the United States on CNN and all agreed that it would be EASY to verify that a nuclear Iran does not have a nuclear weapon. I was stunned to hear that because we've all been programmed to believe otherwise. Bush's entire anti-Iran agenda is designed to prevent Russia and China from controlling the oil there. Keeping America hysterical about Iran helps get public support for an invasion or missile attack.

22. He was right about this...
In March 2003 the chief UN weapons inspector, Hans Blix, said “at this juncture we are able to perform professional no-notice inspections all over Iraq and to increase aerial surveillance.”

http://www.un.org/Depts/unmovic/SC7asdelivered.htm

In April 2003, Blix said he thought the US might initially have believed Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction - although its "fabrication" of evidence raised doubts about even that.

http://www.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30200-1087079,00.html

The U.N. weapons inspector, on the eve of the conflict, remarked sadly on the likelihood that armies would be "waging the war at a tremendous cost, and in the end find there was very little."

BLIX CLAIMS IRAN YEARS AWAY FROM NUCLEAR BOMB

By Agence France Presse (AFP)

STOCKHOLM: Iran is years away from achieving a nuclear capacity sufficient to create a bomb, former chief UN weapons inspector in Iraq Hans Blix said. Speaking in an interview with a Swedish public radio, Blix said: "They are many years away from being able to convert enriched uranium into a bomb."

The United States and the European Union have repeatedly urged Iran to freeze uranium enrichment and reprocessing and to work with the UN atomic energy watchdog amid worries that Tehran is seeking to acquire nuclear weapons.

Tehran meanwhile has claimed that its nuclear program is for civilian use only.

News on Wednesday that Iran could within months take delivery of Russian nuclear fuel to fire up its first nuclear power station has exacerbated international concerns that the new Bushehr plant in southern Iran could be a cover for weapons development.

Blix told Ekot news program the concerns over that plant were exaggerated, pointing out that while the shell of the plant was built with German group Siemens before the Iran-Iraq war, Russia had stepped in after the war with only low-grade nuclear technology.

"It's like putting the motor of a Lada in a Mercedes car," he joked, adding that the light-water reactors being used are also not ideal for creating plutonium.

26. Unless of course they have purchased some from North Korea.
Which would circumvent the timeline nicely. That would be another fine mess Bush has gotten us into.
