Bush to consult Democrats if High Court post opens

By Thomas Ferraro
Reuters
Thursday, June 23, 2005; 3:02 PM

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House said on Thursday that President Bush would consult up to a point with Senate Democrats if there is an opening on the U.S. Supreme Court.

"Yes," spokesman Scott McClellan told reporters when asked if Bush would listen to members of the opposition party as well as Republicans in the Senate, who would decide whether to confirm any nominee to the nation's highest court.

But other officials made clear that the White House was not offering Democrats a veto on who Bush would nominate. Bush has consistently said he would nominate conservative judges who strictly interpret the constitution and do not legislate from the bench.

There has been widespread speculation that there may be a retirement soon on the aging U.S. Supreme Court, giving Bush his first opportunity to make a nomination to this bench.

Senate Democrats sent a letter to Bush on Thursday, saying, "We sincerely hope that you will consult meaningfully with senators on both sides of the aisle well in advance, especially in the event of a Supreme Court vacancy."

10. The same way he consulted with the UN?
Hopefully it will be more than an empty gesture, but I'm very skeptical.

13. What he means is
He'll call Joementum, Landrieu, Ben and Bill Nelson and Salazar and tell them who he's going to stuff down our throats and ask them to keep Boxer and Ted Kennedy in line.

To find out which of his candidates they hate the most so he can appoint that person.

18. Most people only skim the headlines, not read the articles
So there are literally millions of folks who get their news from a ReutersRag who will think Smirk really will consult in some meaningful way with the Dems, and be that much more suspectible to the "Obstructionist Dem" charge when the showdown takes place.

The Dems will just roll over and confirm whoever it is anyway.

They haven't denied him anything. After they let Pryor, Brown & Owens onto the bench (so much for Harry Reid's "big talk" about shuting down the Senate)- I don't really see that they have any arguments left.
