Pentagon IDs Pilot in Spy Plane Crash

WASHINGTON - The Pentagon on Thursday identified the pilot who was killed when his U-2 spy plane crashed while returning to its base in the United Arab Emirates.

The pilot, Maj. Duane W. Dively, 43, of Rancho California, Calif., was assigned to the 1st Reconnaissance Squadron at Beale Air Force Base, Calif, a Pentagon statement said.

It said the cause of the crash is still under investigation and said it occurred in Southwest Asia.

Sounds a lot like what most people call the "Middle East". At least if they just came out and said "Iran" you could respect them for that.

Think about this as a scenerio- a navy destroyer is sunk by a "silkworm missle" launched from coastal Iran. The majority of the crew is killed. Meanwhile, the crew of one of our subs thinks it has fired a harpoon missle at an "al-quadea" freighter.

I don't think that after the loss of over 1700 young American soldiers the death of a spy plane pilot would force us into a war with Iran. The deaths of a couple of hundred sailors and the loss of a ship might.
