Only 34 percent of Californians approve of the job President Bush is doing — his lowest rating in the state since he took office in January 1991, according to a new statewide poll.

An even smaller group — 28 percent — support the president's handling of the war in Iraq, and 36 percent approve of his handling of the economy, according to a Field Poll released Friday.

The poll found that 57 percent of those surveyed said they believe the country is on the wrong track.

Opinions of Bush differed sharply between Democrats and Republicans. Eighty-five percent of Democrats said they disapprove of Bush, while 71 percent of Republicans said they have a favorable view of him. Fifty-nine percent of people not affiliated with either major party said they disapprove of the president.

SACRAMENTO – President Bush's popularity has sunk to an all-time low in this state, with just 34 percent of Californians giving him favorable job reviews, a new Field Poll shows.

The nonpartisan reports that 57 percent disapprove of his job performance, and 9 percent offered no opinion.


The statewide survey also shows that his handling of two key aspects of the job – the war in Iraq and the economy – have faded to new lows.

Sixty-eight percent disapprove of his leadership on the war, with just 28 percent approving. On the economy, 58 percent give him negative reviews, while 36 percent view his actions favorably.

I live in CA. Every time I travel from Scotts Valley to Sunnyvale, I see at least 3-6 Bush bumper stickers. They are ususally on gas guzzling SUVs. I always hope that these Bush supporters think of Bush every time they fill up their gas tanks.

Californians, distressed by the continuing violence in Iraq, have sent President Bush's job performance rating skidding to its lowest level since he first took office, a Field Poll released today shows.

Bush's 34 percent approval rating in the new poll is down from 41 percent in a February survey and far from the 74 percent rating he had in the months following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The 57 percent of California adults who are unhappy with the way Bush is doing his job is also a high-water mark for his presidency.

"The war is driving Bush's ratings down more than anything,'' said Mark DiCamillo, director of the Field Poll. "His numbers on the economy aren't stellar, but it's the war where the numbers are really sliding."

Only 28 percent of Californians approve of the job Bush is doing on the war in Iraq, while 68 percent are convinced he's on the wrong path. A little more than two years ago, in April 2003, 61 percent of those surveyed backed Bush's efforts on the war.
