Governor Pataki's Son Joining The Marines

Jun 24, 2005 9:00 am US/Eastern

(1010 WINS) (ALBANY) Gov. George Pataki said Thursday his eldest son, Teddy, is about to be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps, but hopes to get a deferment to attend law school.

"But once you take the oath and swear the oath, it's up to the Marines at that point," the Republican governor said, adding that his son would be sworn in on Saturday, the day after his father turns 60.

Pataki said that if his son was not granted a deferment and is sent to Iraq, "I think I would feel the way every parent feels, which is tremendous pride in the courage and the patriotism of your child, along with the appropriate concern whenever any of our loved ones are placed in harm's way."

The governor said he hopes his son gets a deferment, which would allow him to spend three years in law school and then four years on active duty with the Marines.

3. Sounds like he has "other priorities"
Didn't he hear about the recruitment shortfall?

No doubt he'll get his deferment in spite of that.

4. Wow, what a cynical attempt to make it look like he's doing his 'duty'
and get out of doing his 'duty'. Because I definitely see this war and service in the armed forces as being the 'duty' of every red blooded war supporting republican and they're sons/daughters. They support it, they support this administration, they have a 'duty' to get suited up.

But this guy sounds like he paid close attention to the way bush** went AWOL. He's just putting a twist to the situation.

14. You don't just join the military and become a 2nd lieutenant.
He most likely was involved in the ROTC program at the university. something that he would have had to have joined 2 years ago.

16. Okay, that's better
but, if he believes in the necessity of war in Iraq, like his Dad, he still ought to get his butt over there.

17. With all due respect, how do you feel qualified to say that?
You don't even know him, have never met him, and yet you're automatically classifying him as a "piece of shit" because his father happens to be Potato-Head Pataki?

I guess I should come to expect the same kind of venom from certain segments here at DU that we like to pretend is the sole domain of the nutjobs over at FR.

15. This deferrment is not out of the ordinary...
I attended school on an Army ROTC scholarship, and I knew other cadets who received educational delays before starting their time. It's not all that common, but it' hardly unheard of.

You guys are all blowing this way out of proportion. It's not as if Pataki's son is trying to shirk duty -- he'll have to fulfill his 4-yr active duty obligation either now, or 3 years from now.

Hell, I for one am somewhat impressed that someone who supports this BS "War on Terror" actually has a child who might be put in harm's way. It's more than you can say for the likes of Bush, Cheney, et. al.

18. yes, a nice gesture, but...
He's just gonna wind up being a marine lawyer (JAG? is that term used in the marines too?). Maybe he'll be the first in when we serve papers on Bin Laden. LOL

After we pay for his law school, send him to Baghdad.

20. so is he ROTC?
I assume, since he just graduated from college ...

If he isn't ROTC he could just join after he finished law school, rather than joining and seeking a deferment.

If he is ROTC, the article seems a little misleading by not mentioning that, as if he were just doing his "patriotic duty" today, rather than fulfilling an obligation that began long before the iraq war started.

21. Typical Pataki, I want him to have a deferment, but go into the marines...
But I still want him to have that deferment...

Basically, he's probably going to get the deferment because like asshole* his daddy is important.

Personally, like all repukes, as soon as something happens to one of their own, they suddendly see the light.

son in law school = support for war

son in Irag = get out of Iraq.

funny how that works.
