UConn Offers Homeland Security Degree

Friday June 24, 2005 6:01 PM

STORRS, Conn. (AP) - A new program at the University of Connecticut will offer a master's degree in homeland security.

At least 70 students have applied for the expected class of 25 for the program this fall, which UConn is offering in partnership with the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif.

``Business and industry are looking for a curriculum that prepares them for the same kinds of things government employees are being trained for,'' said Krista Rodin, dean of UConn's College of Continuing Studies.

``This is an emerging field,'' Rodin said. ``We do not have a curriculum like this anywhere in the country.''

The program is aimed at working adults in both the public and private sector. Students will learn how to respond to disasters such as outbreaks of diseases or terrorist attacks that endanger food supplies.

1. Oh my God.
So now fearmongering is a field of study?

I got my master's at UCONN. This really makes me sad.

3. I went to UConn too
I think this is probably a good idea. Protecting the food supply and what not is a good thing. Most of the people I have met in Homeland Security have been sane, nice people, not at all like those Bush bastards. Remember, this was initially a Dem idea and Bush had to be dragged kicking and screaming....

5. I know emergency response is a huge issue.
I just don't like the idea of homeland security becoming such a commonplace term that we forget how idiotic some of the alerts were.

Obviously we want our country to be secure, but it seems to me that the reason we are on the path we are on is that * and co. have the country so terrified of another attack.

They operate like stockbrokers....fear, fear, fear. You will never have enough money to retire if you don't sock away $8,000 a month from the time you are 22. You know, crap like that.

2. Actually not a bad idea
I think it could serve a purpose, but we should watch carefully to make sure there is no jingoism in the curriculum.

9. I would have signed up....imagine the side benefits
bet they would be handing out jobs in the high 5 figures for people in the know. I have a Masters in Public Administration, this could make me more marketable. Perhaps if I get bored.
