Al-Qaida finds safe haven in Iran
But former leaders reportedly under house arrest

By Robert Windrem

Robert Windrem
Investigative producer

Somewhere north of Tehran, living perhaps in villas near the town of Chalous on the Caspian Sea coast, are between 20 and 25 of al-Qaida’s former leaders, along with two of Osama bin Laden’s sons.

Men such as Saif al-Adel, the former military commander of al-Qaida, and Suleiman Abu Ghaith, the bespectacled bin Laden spokesman, are not in hiding but rather in the care — or custody — of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.

“They are under virtual house arrest,” not able to do much of anything, said one senior U.S. intelligence official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

How they got there and what will happen to them is one of the more intriguing stories of the war on terror, one that is filled with secret movements, stolen communications and a failed attempt at a prisoner exchange involving Iranian dissidents.

17. Yes, just like Iraq was a safe haven for Al Qaeda...
right before the invasion. Of course they will invade find no ties to Al Qaeda, yet declare their war on Iran crucial to winning the war on terror. Then after that happens Iran truly will have ties with Al Qaeda because like Iraq it will become a new terrorist training ground after the US invades.

Then we will hear about Syria's ties to Al Qaeda, and we will smell another invasion coming.

20. I can't see it happening
Apparently the country could be scared shitless into supporting one preemptive war with Iraq, but if a third war in the mideast in one presidency? People would be on the streets.

I hope.

4. and who are this 'investigative' reporters sources?
are they anonymous? are they perhaps from the government? the pentagon maybe?

it is a shame to have to immediately suspect that the news media is peddling bush propaganda but that is the reality of it.

5. I'm so sick of propaganda
Even if this is true, I simply don't believe it. Don't believe anything in the Corporate Media and I don't believe anything coming out of our government. My attitude is to DISbelieve it until/unless something else comes along to confirm it somehow. I haven't been disappointed or too far off yet, which is not to say that this is wrong: I wouldn't know. And don't much care. We ALL know that the Iran War is in process of being set up (and, according to Ritter, already started).

7. And there you have it....
Edited on Fri Jun-24-05 02:24 PM by Oreo
Osama's name starts coming up
A U2 goes down in an undisclosed location
and now (as we all expected) now Al Quaeda is in Iran.

Next shoe to drop is an Al Quaeda attack somewhere which will give Bush all the ammo he'll think he needs to attack without any questions asked. Very very sad.

From the article:
“And we have encouraged and suggested that they ought to try them, they ought to admit freely that they're there — which they have not done — that they're holding them. Or they ought to return them to their countries of origin, which they've also been unwilling to do.”

Do as I say not as I do.

10. "Safe haven"
If they are hiding and one is "under virtual house arrest", then how is that a "safe haven"?

Besides, did this information come from Douglas Feith's buddy Manucher Ghorbanifar or one of his cronies?

Edited on Fri Jun-24-05 03:24 PM by Whoa_Nelly
Thanks to the GOP propaganda spin for US consumption, people conveniently or selectively forget about the other groups of Al-Qaida found in many other areas of the world, such as Indonesia and Malaysia.

Would be attackers of the US are kept under house arrest by Iranian authorities.

If we play nice maybe they'd give them up. But now that "our guys" are spilling the beans, that's probably not going to happen. Maybe bush will 'demand' Iran hand them over?

25. Bull shit.
al-Qaida, predominately Arab Sunni, and the Persian Shi'as (85% of Iran) have little regard for one another.

This is disinformation just as transparent as the lies about WMD.
