Group Apologizes for Comments Comparing Conservative Christian Group to Gestapo

DENVER (AP) - A Washington-based interfaith religious group is apologizing for comments made by some of its members that compared a conservative Christian group to the Gestapo and the Taliban.

The letter of apology released Thursday by the president of The Interfaith Alliance said the comments made in May about the group Focus on the Family were inappropriate for public dialogue.

"We regret that personal opinions expressed by individuals have been viewed as, associated with or confused with the organizational voice of The Interfaith Alliance," the Rev. C. Welton Gaddy wrote.

Clergymen representing the alliance denounced Focus on the Family for criticizing Democratic U.S. Sen. Ken Salazar's support of the Senate filibuster for federal judges.

But that's just me.

How come THEY never apologize? Why is it always up to the forces of reason to make amends?

26. Agreed. I'm all about being rude for the right reason, but here?
The point of the interfaith group in question is that they're NOT scumbag "Christians" who ignore Jesus' teachings.

There's a difference between the mission of this group, and that of the DNC. Let's remember that.

9. No, but they kill abortion doctors
Edited on Fri Jun-24-05 11:55 PM by marbuc
Sounds pretty draconian to me. This is EXACTLY what we should be saying. If they're going to attack liberals (and Dems, since all Dems are lib in their world) as they are, we should be identifying Repubs as closed minded fundies.

28. Minor note: they kill doctors
The doctors they've killed or harmed happened to have been OB/GYNs who also provided abortions. To call them abortion doctors is, to me, the same as calling my bank a notary republic due to the fact that it is one of the services they provide.

Our opposition has framed the debate to focus on one service the doctors provide completely eclipsing the fact that they provide pap screenings, birth control advice/prescriptions, pre-natal care, peri-natal care, and deliver babies, etc.

They have successfully demonized doctors who provide women's reproductive health care.

/stepping off soap box

Thanks for reading.

This makes their behavior that much more despicable, and comparable to the Taliban.

Iraqi Police Find Eight Beheaded Bodies
12:35 PM PDT, June 24, 2005 latimes.com : World

BAQOUBA, Iraq -- Iraqi security forces discovered the bodies of eight beheaded men Friday in two villages north of Baghdad, army officers said.

Six of the bodies belonged to Shiite farmers taken from their home in Hashmiyat, 10 miles west of Baqouba, by an armed group wearing Iraqi army uniforms late Thursday, army Capt. Hashim Amer said.

27. Like does not mean 'exactly the same'.
Beheadings were not the defining characteristic of the Taliban rule in afghanistan. (On the other hand our friends the Saudis behead people on a regular basis.)

The Taliban established a theocratic state in Afghanistan. The religious right is attempting to establish a religious state right here at home in the good old US of A.

Taliban fundamentalism views the state and society as subservient to their interpretation of religious doctrine. Mullahs control the state, the state and its legal system are run on principals (sharia) derived from the basic text (the Koran) of their religion.

The religious right, the American Taliban, seeks to transform our secular republic into a Christian Republic run according to (their interpretation of) biblical principals.

The lack of beheadings in the repetoire of domination and control proposed by the religious right is simply a cultural difference, and not a fundamental difference that falsifies the thesis: the religious right is the American Taliban.

6. Being a right-winger
means you never have to say you're sorry. However liberals reflexively apologize, even for telling the truth. We have to quit acting like we're always afraid of hurting someones feelings.

8. What part of, "they bring a knife, you bring a gun,,,
they put one of your guys in the hospital, you put one of theirs in the morgue" don't the apologists understand. Yes, I know, I am quoting from a movie "The Untouchables" but the philosophy applies. It is the one the Repubs believe in and those who oppose them should use it as well. Bottom line, send the message to Rove, the faux Christians, etc, that, from this point on, nothing, repeat NOTHING, you do will pass without an equal or greater response.

20. Religious extremists have hijacked Christianity, Islam, and Judaism
A Shia hardliner is elected President of Iran. We have a Christian hardliner in the White House. Israel's security service has to dedicate precious resources to keep track of Jewish hardliners. All of them are hell-bent in imposing their sectarian views, by force if need be.

12. Shouldn't have backed down.
They should have added to the statement that Focus on the Family is not and never will be Christian. The sane Christians of this nation to cast out the radical right and ostracize them until such a time as they are willing to move their beliefs back into the Christian faith.

16. Not democrats this time
This has more to do with the fact that the moderate and liberal factions of Christianity need to stand up and say for once and for all that the radical right no longer has any relation with Christianity. The sooner that real Christians, moderates and liberals mostly, cast out these fools the sooner Christianity can start to heal the image problems that it is developing.
