N.Y. Daily News slams Hernandez for not introducing alleged partner

President George W. Bush has nominated a gay man to become an assistant secretary of commerce and head of an international trade office, according to New York Daily News columnists George Rush and Joanna Molloy.

In a June 24 column, the husband and wife columnists, who go by the name Rush & Molloy, report that Israel "Izzy" Hernanzez, 35, a White House advisor and personal aide to Bush during his term as Texas governor, came out to the president last year.

Israel Hernandez, President Bush's nominee for assistant secretary of commerce, is gay according to a N.Y. Daily News column in the paper's Friday edition.

"One source tells us Hernandez waited until Bush was sworn in for a second term to formally tell him he is gay," the columnists reported. "By then, says a source, he’d brought his partner to several official events."

Hernandez, 35, a Texas native, worked from 1995 to 1997 as a personal aide to then Gov. George W. Bush in Austin, Texas, according to the questionnaire Hernandez submitted to the Senate committee. According to press reports, he worked as Bush's travel aide during his 2000 presidential run and often provided the candidate with breath mints before speaking engagements, earning him the nickname "Altoid boy" from the future president.

I think the bigger issue is this man's qualification for the job - or lack thereof.

Bush also knows this man has gay sex because the man has brought his partner to official functions.

The reason this is the issue is that the Republicans have won many elections by accusing Democrats of being pro-Gay. The fundamentalists send out fliers telling their members not to vote for Demmocrats for this very reason.

Bush just attended the Baptist convention and got a standing ovation because he wants a constitutional amendment against gay marriage.

Governor Mitt Romney of Massachusetts is hoping to become the Republican presidential nominee because of his opposition to both gay marriage and legal civil unions for gays.

Since the Republicans WIN elections based on their anti-gay MORAL VALUES message, the public should know that the Republicans are hypocrites.

I didn't take time to consider that. My immediate response was to the fact that that this man is gay and that in itself shouldn't be the issue.

But I agree that we have to hold Bush, his administration, and the GOP to account for the double standards.
