Army National Guard enlists job agency

By LISA CHIU

Seattle Times staff reporter

Faced with nationwide recruitment challenges, the Army National Guard has partnered with Labor Ready, a provider of temporary jobs for unskilled workers, in the hopes the Tacoma-based company's 700 branches across the nation can help boost the dwindling number of recruits.

Dressed in Army fatigues yesterday afternoon, Sgt. Nicholas Grossenbacher of the Washington Army National Guard was at the Renton branch of Labor Ready explaining the GI Bill and the National Guard's time commitment of "two days a month, two weeks a year" to a small group. He said he hopes to visit the branch at least once a month.

<snip>

But others object to the partnership. Todd Boyle, founder of Washington Truth in Recruiting, said it's an example of an "economic draft."

"Many people are vulnerable and need jobs and have no choice but to go into the military," Boyle said. While he prefers this type of adult recruitment to recruitment in high schools, he added that recruiters still omit information regardless of the age of the target audience.

1. "two days a month, two weeks a year" ???
Tell that to the National Guardsmen stationed in Iraq for months and years. These recruiters are sure getting creative, in more ways than one.

2. People would be signing up in droves if Saddam had been involved in 9/11.
It isn't the war. It's the lies that got us into the war which is keeping new recruits away. I wonder if the recruitment totals began to drop in direct correlation to the realization in America that Saddam had nothing to do with the terror attacks on September 11, 2001.

No one wants to die for a lie.

8. Its the fact that guardsmen and women are away as long as
a year or two, two to three stints in Iraq and the fact that their getting their asses shot off. I know, I talk to kids, they don't trust Bush and the military. If kids can figure it out, why can't our gov't leaders?

14. Newsday article from a few weeks ago
They went around interviewing high school kids in poor, minority neighborhoods asking them if they would enlist. Over and over they said the same thing, "If I have to flip burgers for a living, I would rather do that then fight and die in a war I don't believe in."

And they wonder why the Republican Party is losing it among poor, minorities?

3. Sign up at the temp agency, find yourself in Iraq.

And I thought it was bad when they sent me to an "office job" that turned out to be two weeks on an assembly line.

4. An "economic draft"
Now THERE's a meme we can use. I notice the National Guard is heading over to Labor Ready to go trolling for recruits, but they can't quite seem to find their way to the country clubs and the marinas and the other places some of our more well-heeled citizens congregate, asking them to sign up their sons and daughters to protect a system that's working so well for them.

9. Economic draft = cannon fodder!
I'd bet that's exactly what's on the minds of our 'more welled-heeled citizens'! This isn't just a war on terror, but a war on the poor, as well!

"You work today and get paid today"?

11. How about they change it to "We let you work today....
and get you killed tomorrow"?

Do you think that would be closer to the truth? I wonder if 'Labor Ready' is a red company?

7. Notice how the "NATIONAL GUARD"
didn't go overseas in any other war. Shrub got to defend texas and alabama from the viet cong when he decided to show up. Today's Natl Guard gets the shittiest equipment, longest deployments, no healthcare when they return and held hostage by stop loss until social security is no longer solvent . Bend over if you choose to sign up.

served with distinction in Vietnam.

15. National Gaurd Is Looking To Labor Ready Temps
"Faced with nationwide recruitment challenges, the Army National Guard has partnered with Labor Ready, a provider of temporary jobs for unskilled workers, in the hopes the Tacoma-based company's 700 branches across the nation can help boost the dwindling number of recruits"

THEIR DESPARATE

It looks like our military now has stooped to low ground. I guess they havent yet come to acknowledge their problems come from a lack of integrity and honesty that has been bestowed upon all branches of the military.

The military would have been free of this problem had their COC been completly honest about the reason they are in Iraq......No!!! let me rephrase this.......They wouldnt have this problem had we not invaded a country that never attacked us or had anything to do with 9/11

I know you neo-con will write this off to creative marketing I call it preying on those who are with out.

20. How about the poor who have had their benefits terminated
They are very ripe for W's wars. With Bush lowering the requirements, maybe the disabled can also qualify. Cannon fodder doesn't require much dexterity.

recruiters R not greeting people as they exit the mega churches. I'm absolutely certain these rabid, rong wing, religious chimp lovers would B more than willing 2 sacrifice their children. Hell, the reverent could even fire them up w/ a rousing sermon. Get their numbers up in no time.

25. Yeah, let the rich kids get a pass on defending our country
A truly GOP plan. In fact, the rich kids who don't enlist should get a tax credit for planning alternative careers. They are true entrepreneurs and the saviors of our society. This is the GOP way.

Translated: Those dumb poor kids should enlist and be grateful for a chance to better themselves if they survive. Kind of like the GOP who think the Blacks should be grateful for us liberating them after making them slaves to prosper us. Republicans are truly a twisted bunch.

26. Of course! The little rich rethugs can have Daddy find somewhere else for
them to go.

I've been saying it for a long, long time now. If the economy is in the toilet, and the jobs keep getting sent overseas when people here need jobs, the military will be the only option for survival for a lot of people.

27. I'd like to know how many recruiting tables were set up
at the College Republicans' convention last week.

And, knowing the answer is 'zero,' I'd like to hear a recruiter explain why.
