Longhorn will include support for RSS data feeds

16:23 2005-06-25
Microsoft Corp. said Friday that the next version of its Windows operating system Longhorn will have built-in support for RSS, short for Really Simple Syndication, an increasingly popular way to get news and other information channeled straight to a computer, reports Associated Press.

In the long-delayed Windows upgrade, code-named Longhorn and expected to be released late next year, an RSS icon will appear in the Internet Explorer 7 Web browser, which will be released with Longhorn.

Joe Wilcox, an analyst with Jupiter Research, cited by AP, said Microsoft's foray into RSS is reminiscent of its rush to capture its share of the burgeoning Web browser market in the mid-1990s. They responded then by making Internet Explorer part of the operating system.

wikipedia link

in short an rss feed is something that you can use to read multiple sites very easily. You need a newsreader to use them. Many popular sites have them.

2. RSS is a news feed.
If you use Firefox, the "Latest Headlines" bookmark that automatically comes with it is RSS, I believe.

9. Yes, and there's an RSS addon
that will crawl the headlines of selected news services along the bottom of the browser.

I keep mine set to BBC. It's a neat addon.

8. Firefox already has RSS, so once again ...
Gates is a little late. :P

By the way ... if the Firefox "Live Bookmark" feature (which is used with "Latest Headlines") isn't enough for you, try the Sage extension. I use it for all my RSS feeds. :-)

Could I get some feedback from DUers as to what newsreader you are using. And, can you recommend a free newsreader for IE/browser on XP?
