Gunmen kill police colonel in Baghdad

Gunmen shot dead a high-ranking police officer in eastern Baghdad on Sunday, police said.

"Unknown armed men gunned down Colonel Riadh Abdul Karim, a deputy police chief, at about 8:00 a.m. (0400 GMT) outside his home in al-Mashtal neighborhood in eastern Baghdad," a police source said on condition of anonymity.

Meanwhile, two Iraqis were killed and three others wounded when two mortar rounds landed on a house in Baladiyat neighborhood in eastern Baghdad, the source said, adding the mortar attack also took place at about 8:00 a.m. (0400 GMT) and giving no further details.

Also on Sunday, a suicide car bomber hit a police headquarters in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, killing four police officers and wounding 14 others.

Iraqi police and security forces have been frequently under attack by insurgents who have attempted to cripple the Shiite-dominated government since its formation in late April.
